Jon Richardson Obituary

Former Panthers Stadium President Jon Richardson has died after a lengthy battle with cancer, a source confirmed to the Observer on Tuesday afternoon.

Richardson, 53, was the oldest son of Carolina Panthers owner/founder Jerry Richardson. He served as the Panthers Stadium LLC President from the team's inception until his resignation in 2009.

Richardson and his brother, Mark, resigned unexpectedly from high-ranking positions with the team in 2009. The brothers remained part of the ownership group, but had kept a low profile with the organization since their resignations.

Jon Richardson had successfully battled cancer while he worked for the Panthers.

He was a three-year letterman and two-year starter at wide receiver at North Carolina. He led the Tar Heels in receptions in 1981.

He had a tryout in 1982 with the Baltimore Colts, his father's former team.

Richardson, who had undergraduate and MBA degrees from UNC, started A-OK Home Services in Chapel Hill before selling the business after five years and joining the Panthers in 1994.

As president of the stadium, Richardson oversaw several stadium improvement projects, including a $5.5 million renovation of the club level in 2003, the replacement of the playing field in 2004 and the installation of LED boards in 2007.

In June, Jerry Richardson, in addition to donating $10 million for naming rights to UNC Charlotte's football stadium, endowed a scholarship in Jon's name to the university. Jon's son, Johnson, is the tight ends coach for the 49ers.

"That is from my wife and me. He deserves it," Jerry Richardson said at a news conference announcing the naming rights.
Richardson is survived by his wife, Kathleen, and three children.

Mr. and Mrs. Richardson, Kathleen, Jackson, Rose and Claire, Mark and Ashley, may God comfort you in your time of sorrow in the passing of Jon. I was saddened to hear he had lost his long battle with cancer. I was most thankful to have met Jon and the Richardson family at Relay for Life at the First Union / Wachovia campus on Harris Blvd. many years ago. Jon was battling cancer at that time, but he had the most wonderful attitude in dealing with it. He was an amazing man, with an amazing family. I have offered up many prayers in the past for all of you, and will continue to do so. By the grace of God, and the power of his promise to us, we will all see Jon again.
With love and sympathy. Lynn

In my two brief encounters with Jon down in Chapel Hill, I was charmed and inspired by his friendliness and interest. Since that time, I have learned that Jon's friendliness, warmth, sincerity, compassion, kindness and down-to-earth style impacted hundreds of people in a very positive way. I have no idea how nature and nurture combine to create such a fine person, but I am deeply grateful for the life he lived among us. Rose,
We can not express our sadness on the loss of your Dad. David remembers Jon when David played football at Spartan High and Jon was in Junior High and responsible for the team's laundry. Yuk! But David said he never complained. Jon was glad to be a part of the team. His life showed he was a team player. Rose, you are a sweet genuine young lady. We so enjoyed getting to know you through our daughter, Ellen, at Wofford. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We both know what it is like to lose a loved one to a treacherous disease. We love you. If you need anyone to talk to, please do not hesitate to call us.

I would like to send my prayers to Jon's Family. I met Jon thru a friend that worked for him at a Panthers game. I was going thru a fight with cancer myself the same time he was, he always checked on me even when he was going thru his hard days of treatment, and would send me hand written cards of inspiration. he always treated me like he had known me for his whole life. I have lost a dear friend, but he will not be forgotten . I would like to say Thanks Jon for all you did for me. And my God bless your family

Jon was one of the best... I had the pleasure of working with him through SF&B first on game days and later as a full time employee. He ALWAYS had a kind word, smile and pat on the back. I was saddened to hear tonight of Jon's passing. I was a student trainer at UNC when Jon played there in the early 80's. In the grand scheme of things related to Carolina Football at that time, I was a 'nobody'. Jon Richardson always made me feel like a 'somebody'! He was kind, respectful, and always appreciative of something as simple as having his ankles taped. Our world needs more people like Jon. Mr. and Mrs. Richardson -- you raised a mighty fine son. To all members of the Richardson family, please rest assured that the best of Jon lives on in each of you!

To all of the family,
God has left us so many good memories of Jon.
I remember meeting him when he was only 9years old at the original Hardees in Morganton NC. Mr Richardson introduced Jon to me and his words were " nice to meet you sir". This from a nine year old. No wonder he was such a nice man, his formative years were taught correctly and properly.
I am fortunate to have met him and I will be praying for all the family.

Even as a student at Spartanburg High School, Jon possessed a genuine integrity and sincerity to all who knew him. He was so different from all of the other "football jocks". Never cocky, always humble, and had a grin that left me feeling happy every time I saw him. His life was a living testament of goodness to the world. I treasure the conversations we had in classes together and how he laughed at my never ending jokes. He would always ask me if I had a new joke for him. I am proud to have known such a nice guy. To the family: Jon is most assuredly not "lost". "To live in hearts we leave behind is not to die".

Jerry & Rosalind, Kathleen, Mark & Ashley, and the entire Richardson extended Family, The David Hatcher's wish the best of days ahead for you all, for Jon's battle was a courageous one fought with dignity, as demonstrated by the character of the Richardson family. Our family's association allows wonderful memories riding motorcycles up Shortoff Mountain, hiking on Grandfather Mountain, swimming, skiing, and the competitive tennis tournaments with children and adults at the lake. So many great dinners watching the sunset over the Blue Ridge mountains as a backdrop while Jerry told stories to keep everyone entertained.
We will always remember his strength of spirit, determination, friendship, and kindness associated throughout the years of growth we all experienced.
Jon's legacy is evident with the way he lived, how he approached people, and the honesty exhibited everyday.
God Bless you all.

Jerry and all the family:
What a wonderful son, brother, husband and father you had. Jon was truly a Christian gentleman and friend to all. Not sure who loved who the most, Jon loved his Aunt Lucille and Uncle Willard and they loved him with all their heart. I know they are now having a wonderful reunion in Heaven. Jon loved all of his Spring Hope,NC family as well and will truly be missed in Spring Hope. He always went to the Showside Grill when in town and he enjoyed speaking to every one while taking his Aunt Ellen there to eat.
So sorry for the loss of a precious child of God, but he has certainly gained the life we all should be looking for. He was so kind to everyone. Just know that the family will continue to be in my prayers. God Bless you.

I am very sadden and touched by the death of Jon. I considered him a friend when I worked for Hardees at Hillcrest in Spartanburg. I do recall a few times he would alert me to when his dad was about to visit the restaurant. I do not know why he did that, however I sure did appreciate it. The last time I recall seeing him was at a Panthers Game in Clemson. I heard this fellow calling my name from a distance and behold it was Jon. I was so shocked that he remembered me. Jon had the same persona as his dad. He came up to me to shake my hand and thanked me for the support. He will be truly missed!

While still with the Carolina Panthers, Jon Richardson spent his own time to call me after I sent a rather harsh letter in general to the Panthers on their web site after that dismal 1-15 season. He wanted to hear my side again and to discuss each point that I made as a concerned, charter PSL member. He listened and assured me that what the Panthers had in mind at the time (the hiring of John Fox as head coach though he couldn't give me this exact information) were going to solve many of the team's problems but that it would take a little time. He addressed other issues with me as well during a call that had to last 30 to 45 minutes and I was impressed by his demeanor and interest. He later sent me a hand written card thanking ME for my concern and time when I should have been thanking him. That impressed me tremendously. I still have that card pinned to my board next to my home office computer because I considered direct contact from a Panthers' executive special but the reason and time Jon spent with me that much more amazing. I was sad when he left the Panthers, but certainly more sad with his untimely passing. A cancer patient myself, I kind of know what Jon was experiencing the last few years and I am humbled by how he never let anyone know how badly he was doing. He was a fine man and I extend my deepest sympathies to his family. He is in a better place and no longer suffering. Rest in peace Jon. You will be missed.

The first picture I will always have in my head of Jon are my childhood memories with my dad of arriving at the stadium before the games. More often than not, Jon was a fixture outside ... warmly greeting fans, extending a welcoming hello and a smile, shaking their hands, and snapping photos with them. They say you write your own obituary by the way you live your life and treat other people. The way Jon lived his life and treated people is how he will be remembered forever .... as the gracious, kind-hearted, dignified, and humble human being he was. He remembered everyone's name, called you by name, looked you in the eye, and shook your hand like he meant it. My dad always thought and spoke so highly of Jon, and held him in the highest regard.

Three years ago when Dad died, Jon left the kindest and most thoughtful message for my family in my father's online guestbook, sharing fond memories he had of Dad. It is something I will always remember. And now it is time to do the same for him.

Our love to the Richardsons,
and to all whose lives he touched so deeply ....

Jon- a blue jean and t-shirt kind of guy. Now in God's loving kingdom, Jon will continue to touch lives with his generous heart, humility, wit, infectious laugh, love for nature, gentleness, love for the common man, love of music and most importantly his dedication to his loving wife, Kathleen and children, Johnson, Rose and Claire. Jon's tender spirit and commitment to his faith will live on forever.

Mr. and Mrs. Richardson...my heart goes out to you at the loss of your son. No parent should have to endure the pain of losing a child. Know that you have my prayers.

As trainer at UNC and as a resident of Chapel Hill, I knew Jon both on and off the field. He was a fierce competitor on the field. Off the field I knew him as my garbage man. I was his first customer for A-OK services!!! The first few months he picked my garbage up in his pick up truck. Boy did that change over the next few years. I remember the first day he stopped in the new big truck!! I could see the smile coming for blocks!!
A great smile and always a heart felt hello. My thoughts and prayers are with his family.

I met Jon and Mark on Lake James in the 70s. The Richardsons obviously raised thoughtful and friendly children. The clunker car they drove was a good example, as was their invitations to water ski and hang out with them. I have nothing but great memories of Jon and am praying for his family.

I knew Jon at Carolina. He was such a genuinely nice guy--not a stuck up "superstar" like so many of the other players. I remember riding by Bojangles (or was it Hardees) on the way to Wrightsville Beach on several occasions and he would be working at the drive thru window and always slipped a little something extra into our bags for the ride. My thoughts and prayers are with the Richardson Family.

My condolences to the whole family from a former neighbor of Jon's grandparents and good friend of his aunts and uncles. He was much loved by his extended family. I know he will be missed.
