Keith Stroud Obituary

Keith McLendon Stroud CHARLOTTE - Keith McLendon Stroud, age 71, of Charlotte, was born in Smithfield, NC and grew up in the Carolinas, the youngest of eight children. Bright and precocious as a child, Keith graduated from Appalachian State University. He taught school in Charlotte, where he met his beloved wife, Frances. He continued his education at the University of South Carolina School of Law. After helping to build the first public defender's office in Mecklenburg County, Keith opened his private practice and continued to practice law in Charlotte for over 40 years. Warm, charming and witty, Keith made friends wherever he went. Respected and well liked by his colleagues, Keith was awarded recognition for a lifetime of professional achievement near the end of his career. Keith was a proud and supportive father of his three children and delighted in his five grandchildren. Keith embraced a broad range of interests. Boating, hunting, and fishing were among his favorite activities, and he retired to Lake Norman to live on the water. Survivors include his sister, Alice Hughes; his sons, Keith McLendon Stroud, Jr., and Taylor Stroud (Sara Stroud); his daughter, Walker Stroud McNiff (Rob McNiff); his grandchildren, Parker, John and Asher, Max and Alice. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM, March 14, at Christ Episcopal Church, 1412 Providence Rd., Charlotte. Robertson Funeral & Cremation Service is serving the family, www.throbertson.com.

I am just finding out and it is such a shock. I worked for Keith and I loved and respected his strength and smarts. He was always good to his clients and he never harrassed them for payment. When he represented state appointed clients he would sometimes forget to give me information to Bill the state. You were one of a kind lawyer, an example for many lawyers to follow. He was cute to. Wherever you are, keep that beautiful smile smiling.

To the Stroud family, I am so very sorry to hear about the loss of Keith. I knew Keith both in and outside of the courtroom for over 30 years. Keith was the epitome of dignity and integrity in his profession. Never hesitated to help a police officer. In my years as a Charlotte Police Officer I developed great respect for this fine gentleman. When I started as a young lawyer, I always looked up to Keith and wanted to practice with the same dignity and fervor. As I got to know Keith personally as a friend I wanted even more to emulate Keith's graciousness, compassion, wit, and toughness as a man.
