Lee Allison Obituary

Lee Grant Allison
PEACHLAND -- Mr. Allison was born on May 15, 1925 in Hillsborough, NC and passed away on June 18, 2010 in Autumn Care Nursing Home after a lengthy illness.
Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Monday in Peachland Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Peachland Cemetery. The family will greet friends today (Sunday) from 6:30 - 8:00 p.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home.
Mr. Allison and his family came to Peachland in December 1950 from Durham to stay 6 months and ended up staying for 60 years. Mr. Allison had completed his degree at what was then North Carolina State College in Raleigh and was contacted to fill an agricultural teaching position at Peachland High School when the position became open at midyear. Mr. Allison would later say that he and his family liked the Peachland community so much they decided to make it their home.
Mr. Allison was married to Margaret Haithcock Allison for 62 years and in addition to his wife, is survived by their four children, Charles Lee Allison and his wife, Marilyn, of Peachland, Edward Carr Allison and his wife, Kathy, of Shelby, Arlene Allison Carpenter of Polkton, and Harvey Grant Allison and his wife, Sandy, of Weddington. Also surviving are 10 grandchildren, Dr. Holly Allison Kiker and her husband, Jason, Adam Allison, Jill Allison, Victoria Allison, Sean Allison and his wife, Ashley, LeAnne Olive and her husband, Bentley, Brett Carpenter, Grant Allison, Caitlin Allison, Spencer Allison; and 4 great-granddaughters, Eliza and Lydia Olive, Kyla Allison and Ansley Kiker. He is also survived by two brothers, Fred Allison of Durham and his wife, Faye, and David Allison and his wife, Brenda, of Bennett; and a sister-in-law, Rachel Allison of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Blanche Allison, a brother Ervin Allison; 3 sisters, Jane King, Anne Byrd, and Marie Gates; and two granddaughters, Leah Allison and Hilary Ross Carpenter.
Mr. Allison attended Hillsborough High School and afterwards joined the Navy and served from 1943-1946 during WWII in the South Pacific. When he returned home, he enrolled at NC State College and received a degree in Agricultural Education. He began teaching agriculture at Peachland High School and taught there from 1950-1960. He moved to Anson High School in Wadesboro when county high schools were consolidated. He later returned to NC State and received his Master's Degree, obtained his principal's certificate from Appalachian State University and finally, an advanced graduate degree in education from UNC-Chapel Hill. He served as principal of Anson High School from 1965 to 1972 and Bowman Senior High School from 1972 until his retirement in 1985. He received the 1985 'Excellence in Education Administration Award' from the N.C. Association of School Administrators - the highest award presented to principals by the organization.
After retiring, Mr. Allison served as an Anson County Commissioner for District 4 from 1986 -1998. He enjoyed working for the people of Anson County. Among his many noted accomplishments was the doubling of the size of the water filtration plant and the expansion of distribution lines providing water to more families throughout the county.
Farming was also a very big part of Mr. Allison's life. He grew up on a farm in Orange County and after moving to Anson County, purchased a farm in the White Store Community raising poultry and cattle.
A faithful member of Peachland Baptist Church, Mr. Allison attended regularly until declining health forced him to stay at home. Over the years, he served as a deacon, financial secretary, Sunday School Director and Sunday School teacher.
Memorials may be made to Peachland Baptist Church, P.O. Box 146, Peachland, NC 28133.

I worked during my 11& 12th grade at Bowman High in the office and this was my very first job. Being in the office on a daily basis, I witnessed the amount of work that Mr. Allison and others did for all of us. I sincerely appreciate and grateful that I was given the opportunity to know and work with him. This job allowed me the opportunity to save for college and I am eternally grateful. Blessing to the family, Janice Tucker (Class of 77)

Arlene, & family, I am so sorry in the passing of your father. From the day we are born, we soon know that death is the final passage we will make. The Lord lets us choose our path in life, an gives us the decision to make in accepting him. I know your father was a good Christian person and know he will be missed a great deal, but the angels are rejoicing in Heaven and so should we. He was a good principal in High School and made such an impact in many young peoples' lives He was a faithful leader in his church & community. May God comfort & surround you with his love. You all are in my prayers.

Mr. Allison was a wonderful principal and I was honored when he smiled at me before handing me my diploma from Bowman High; this is one of my favorite memories of him. My sympathies to Arlene and the rest of the family.

I was so saddened to learn of Mr Allison's passing. He was not only a fabulous principal, but a truly great person. Anson County has definitely lost a legend. Prayers to the family, whom I always had such respect for. Also, rest assured that your dad was a remarkable man and that he and Ms Margaret raised wonderful children. May Mr Allison rest in peace.

Mr. Allison was an inspiration to young men growing up in Peachland. He was my teacher, my Sunday school leader, my neighbor and my friend. I will miss him. May the Lord comfort the Mrs. Allison, Charles, Edward, Arlene, Harvey and their families in their time of grief but take comfort that Mr. Allison is now with the Lord and we will see him soon.

Arlene, Harvey, and the rest of the family, my prayers are with you today on Father's Day as your father has gone to heaven to join the great Father we have always waited to meet. L.G. is at peace now, a new body with no scars, bad health, and no more pain. He has eternal life now and someday I will too have it and get to see him again myself. God Bless all of you and be thankful that we have a loving and forgiving Father to look up to in our own needs here on earth.
