Leila Bennett Obituary
WADESBORO -- Leila Self Bennett died on Thursday, March 13, 2003 at Anson Community Hospital.
The daughter of the late Dr. I. R. and Isabel Tobey Self, she was born in Lincolnton, NC. She graduated from Lincolnton High School and Duke University where she was a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She taught for several years in Lincolnton and Lincoln County Schools.
In 1935 she married William LeGrand Bennett, who preceded her in death in 1980, and moved to Wadesboro. She was a homemaker and was active in church, social, and community activities.
As a member of First Baptist Church she sang in the Chancel Choir for almost sixty years and served in leadership positions in her Sunday School Class and in the Women's Missionary Union. She was a member of the Contract Bridge Club, the Ola Kala Garden Club, the Worth While Club and she served as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and Anson County Hospital Auxiliary.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Dr. Ruffin Self and Dr. Fred Self of Lincolnton and a sister, Mary Self Fritz of Hickory.
She is survived by her son, W. LeGrand Bennett, Jr. of Wadesboro, and her daughters, Leila Self B. Doughton of Hickory and Isabel B. Johnston of Charlotte. Also surviving are her sister, Nancy Self Alexander of Landis, her grandchildren. The Reverend E. Jones Doughton of Columbus, GA, Leila B. and The Reverend John A. Hinkle, Jr. of Powder Springs, GA, Mark B. Johnston of Charlotte, and her great-grandson John Austin (Tripp) Hinkle, III.
Her funeral will be conducted by The Reverend E. Jones Doughton, The Reverend John A. Hinkle, Jr., and Dr. Fred Senter at her church on Monday, March 17, 2003 at 11:00 AM.
A graveside service will follow at Hollybrook Cemetery in Lincolnton on Monday afternoon at 3:30PM.
The family will receive friends in the Church Parlor from 10:00 to 11:00 on Monday morning and at other times at the home of her son on West Wade Street.
