Louis Harrelson Obituary

Louis Franklin Harrelson, 87, of Charlotte, North Carolina entered eternal rest on June 2, 2017. Mr. Harrelson was born in Mullins, South Carolina to Robert Brooker Harrelson and Blanche Aman Harrelson. Mr. Harrelson was the youngest of six siblings in a very close knit loving family. Football and boxing played an important role in Mr. Harrelson's young years. He was a standout football player at Mullins High School, playing with the University of South Carolina standout Bishop Strickland. Following high school, Mr. Harrelson went on to play football at the University of South Carolina under Coach Rex Enright. Mr. Harrelson served in the United States Marine Corps, where he was a golden glove boxer and football player. Fittingly, Mr. Harrelson completed his service as a drill instructor at Paris Island, South Carolina. After serving in the Marine Corps, Mr. Harrelson moved to Columbia, South Carolina where he entered the Automotive Industry, working himself up to Sales Manager at Pulliam Motor Company. In 1971, he purchased land on South Blvd in Charlotte which resulted in the opening of his flagship dealership, Harrelson Ford, a Charlotte icon. Mr. Harrelson served in the automotive capacity for 60 plus years, ever the hard worker. Mr. Harrelson enjoyed all sports, especially pulling for his beloved South Carolina Gamecocks. A season ticket holder for USC football for 50 years, he was a very proud sponsor and Gamecock Club member. Attending every home football game from his 50 yard line seats was one of the highlights of his life. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed by his family. Mr. Harrelson is preceded in death by his parents and siblings of Mullins, South Carolina and his ex-wife, Debra Harrelson of Charlotte, North Carolina. Surviving are his children, Kimberly Harrelson-Lesesne (Ralph) of Lexington, South Carolina, Brooke Harrelson of Charlotte, Misty Harrelson of Charlotte, and Robert L.F. Harrelson (Kim) of Charlotte, North Carolina; six grandchildren that include Brittany Peer, Savannah and Katelyn Lesene, Ashtyn Cole, Chase Harrelson, and Ava Harrelson; long-time companion , Susan Thompson. The family will receive friends on Monday, June 5, 2017 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC. A Funeral Service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, June 6 in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington with Rev. Dr. Deborah Starczewski officiating. A reception for family and friends will immediately follow the service and then conclude with burial at Sharon Memorial Park. Those honored to serve at Pallbearers will be Roy B. Morris, Ralph Lesesne, Kenny Grant, JR Hicks, Lloyd Edwards, and Billy Gephart. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org. Finally, for you Dad, "That's a Louis F. Harrelson guarantee!!" Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service is in charge of the arrangements for Mr. Louis F. Harrelson. A greater man one cannot find. One with a heart so true and kind. I'm truly blessed that I was allowed just a little of his time. It was a great honor and privilege to learn some of the wisdom he had to share. He will be dearly missed and forever loved.

Without a doubt, Uncle Louis and I had some very fun times together, here in Washington with my father, and his adoring sister Jane, and of course down in Charlotte, at his beautiful home and at the Dealership! I bought my most recent car from Louis in Rock Hill and was very glad to see him then. He was quite a tour de force and I say, "Thanks for the memories" and rest in peace, southern man..

Love, Margaret

I met Louis in 1980 when I first moved to Charlotte from NYC. I always admired how he loved just being "down to earth". Even though he was so successful, he never acted like a "big shot". I wouldn't even consider buying a car from anyone but Louis, he was simply that special and made everything fun. I will miss him just like I miss Debra May. RIP, Louis

Mr. Harrelson ultimately had a positive influence on my life after 6+ years in his employee. The work and life lessons were his gift. I can truly say that at least once a week I ponder on my time either being on the Ford store showroom floor, the service lane, business office or especially his office. The number of memories of the crazy times. I wish I had kept a diary, it would have been over flowing.

Working there made you part of a quasi brotherhood. Thank you Mr. Harrelson, you were very kind to me and I'll forever be grateful. I tear up while I'm typing this; but then think of what you'd say to me for that behavior.

The Harrelson family and those of us who had the luck to have been touched by Mr. Harrelson lost a good role model. We're better for having had him in our lives. Thank you sir.

With Deepest Sympathy,
David B. Ellis
