WADESBORO -- Miss Lucile Crump, 103, died November 8, 2006 at Anson Community Hospital, Wadesboro, North Carolina.
She was born on December 9, 1902 on Hauser Street in Winston-Salem, North Carolina to Joe Crump and Bell Hunt Crump. She was christened at Goler Memorial AME Zion Church, Winston-Salem, NC.
She attended elementary school in Winston-Salem public school system. She attended four years of high school at Mary Potter Memorial High School, a private boarding school in Oxford, North Carolina, where she graduated.
She graduated from Slater Normal School (now Winston-Salem State University) where she completed the two-year program for elementary school teacher certification. She later received the Bachelor of Science Degree in teacher education from North Carolina A. and T. State College (now North Carolina A & T State University) in Greensboro, North Carolina. She pursue further studies at Johnson C. Smith University, Charlotte; Fayetteville State University, Fayetteville; North Carolina State University, Raleigh; Winston-Salem State University; and the University of Utah.
Miss Crump has enjoyed a distinguished career of 48 years as a school teacher. She served as principal and educator in Anson County Public Schools, Green Hill School and West Deep Creek High School.
Miss Crump was a member of Kesler Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church where she served as a member of the Board of Trustees and the Senior Choir, Church secretary and treasurer, treasurer of the Board of Stewards, chairman of the Ministry of Kindness, and secretary of the Board of Christian Education. She served as president of the Young Women's Missionary Society of the Parent Body of Woman's Home and Overseas Missionary Society. On September 26, 1976, she was honored as Kesler Chapel Woman of the Year during the Woman's Day Observance. On the second Sunday in September 2000, she was named 'Mother of the Church'. And her most joyous occasion was the commemoration of her 100th birthday on December 9, 2002.
Miss Crump has served productively in civic and professional organizations of the community and the state. She was a charter member of the Wadesboro Branch of the NAUW, North Carolina Retired School Personnel;member of Pilgrim Chapter No. 244, OES.
Visitation is Saturday 6-8 p.m. at Smith's Funeral Home. Funeral services on Sunday, November 12, 2 p.m. at Kesler Chapel AME Zion Church, Wadesboro. Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Winston-Salem, NC.
She leaves to cherish her memory, a devoted foster son who lovingly took care of her during her final years, Ralph Vance McCoy, and his wife, Mittie, of the home.
