ALBEMARLE -- Mrs. Sikes, 87, died Sunday, November 27, 2005 at Duke Health in Raleigh. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hartsell Funeral Home's Lefler Memorial Chapel in Albemarle, Rev. John Futterer and Rev. Dennis Ricks officiating. Burial will follow in Fairview Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.
Born January 4, 1918 in Northhampton County, NC, she was the daughter of the late William Allen Williamson and the late Lucy Ann Sykes Williamson. Mrs. Sikes was raised in Turkey, NC and attended Flora McDonald College. She graduated from Women's College of the University of North Carolina and taught elementary school in Albemarle for nearly 30 years, most of which was spent teaching first grade. She was the widow of the late Oscar Jennings Sikes, Jr., whom she married in 1940.
Survivors include her sons and daughters-in-law, O. J. Sikes III and Elena of Leonia, NJ, and Dr. William A. Sikes and Jennie of Rose Valley, PA; daughter, Mary Williamson Sikes of Raleigh, NC; grandchildren, O. J. Sikes IV of Ridgewood, NJ, Marianne Sikes Grush and husband Eric of Holly Springs, NC, Foster Wilder Sikes and wife Keri of Raleigh, and John L. Sikes of New York, NY; and great grandchildren, Mary Kathryn Grush, Matthew Wilder Sikes and William Jennings Grush.
