Michael Tye Obituary

Michael Randolph Tye SARASOTA, FL - Michael Randolph Tye, 73, of Sarasota, FL died unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 28, 2013. He was the son of the late George Lytle and Margaret Graham Winchester Tye. He graduated from Oak Park-River Forest High School in Oak Park, Illinois in 1958 and received a Bachelor of Architecture from Miami University in Oxford, OH in 1963. Mike was an accomplished and talented architect. He held positions with the Greater London Council in London, England; Director of Design at J.N. Pease Associates; Principal with Odell Associates - both Charlotte firms. He served both as Vice President-Architecture with Reynolds, Smith and Hills (RS&H) in Greensboro and subsequently took over as President before founding Tye Architecture Group. Mike later joined with former partners from RS&H to form Tye, Spotts and Davis. During his extensive career Mike designed and led projects building residential, government and commercial structures around the continental U.S. and abroad to include the very first skyscraper in Charlotte, Jefferson First Union Tower (now Two Wells Fargo Center). Mike served as President of the American Institute of Architects (AIA), NC Chapter, and was appointed by the Governor to serve the NC Board of Architecture, including two terms as President. He held an NCARB certificate and served that organization with distinction for many years. In addition to many other awards and accolades, Mike was named one of the "10 Outstanding Young Men" by the Charlotte Jaycees in 1975. Mike is survived by his loving and devoted spouse of 25 years, Barbara Wright Tye, along with his three children: Michael Jr., of Charlotte, NC; Duncan E. (Laura), of Falls Church, VA and their children Taylor and Connor; Maggie Tye Marshall (Seth), of Greensboro, NC and their children Payton, Madeline and Claire. He is also survived by two loving sisters, a brother, brother-in-law, mother-in-law, nieces, nephews, and many treasured friends. Mike was a true gentleman - loving, kind, patient, intelligent, funny and loved by all who met him. He will be missed by everyone who was part of his life. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations to Operation Smile of North Carolina, 502 East Cornwallis Drive, Suite L, Greensboro, NC 27405. A Celebration of Life along with private family services were both held in Sarasota, Fl.

Barbara,
My deepest sympathy to you and your family. Mike's passing hit me hard. I've known Mike for over 50 years. We were roommates in college during our sophomore year and fraternity brothers ever since. Mike was a gentle giant; never a harsh word, always a big smile. A great family man who will be missed by all.
God's speed, 'Tye-o'
