Dr. Michele Maria Morland Shaul

Charlotte, North Carolina - Dr. Michele Maria Morland Shaul, a devoted mother and wife, dedicated teacher, caring mentor and advocate for language, culture and the arts passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025.
She was born October 12, 1951, in Oakland, CA, to Captain John Benjamin and Marietta Díaz Silveira Morland. She graduated with both her Bachelor's and Master's degrees from the University of Florida and received her doctorate in Latin American Literature from the University of North Carolina- Chapel Hill.
Dr. Shaul (our mom) was considered to be the "heart of the world languages program" at Queens University of Charlotte where she began teaching in 1989. She served as a Professor of Spanish, the Director of Latino Studies and the Chair of the World Languages Department until her death. She was co-founder and co-editor of the e-journal Label Me Latina/o. Her critical essays and poetry are published in a number of journals and collections.
Her excellence and dedication as an educator was honored when she received the Queens University Hunter-Hamilton Love of Teaching Award (2016) and the Latin American Coalition's Con A de Arte Award (2023). Those who her knew her as "The Nicest Person You Know" (TNPYK) will remember her kindness, humility, genuine care for others and her remarkable positive attitude even in the face of difficulty. Everyone she encountered felt her love, her passion for their success, her willingness to help, her care for living and always expressing her advice with what she genuinely believed, "that in the end, no matter what you face, you will be okay."
She is survived by her husband of 51 years Roger Shaul, her daughter Lisa Thompson and her husband David, her son Ben Shaul and his wife Nicole, her son Robby Shaul and his wife Megan, and her 7 grandchildren, Catherine, Caroline and Christian Thompson; Kensleigh, Lincoln and Maverick Shaul; and Sydney Shaul, all of Charlotte, NC.
A Memorial Service will be held at Queens University of Charlotte in Belk Chapel at 2:00 PM on Wednesday November 5, 2025. Interment will be in Forest Lawn East Cemetery in Weddington, NC at a later date.
