Robert Hoagland Obituary

Col. Robert J. Hoagland, MD
10/21/1909 - 9/28/2007
Beloved, respected, well educated generous. Died September 28, 2007. Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM Saturday, October 6, 2007 at Southminster, 8919 Park Road in Charlotte.
Dr. Hoagland was born in New York City to William and Clara Hoagland. His excellent grades enabled him to finish high school at age 15. He graduated from the University of Michigan in 1929, and Cornell Medical School in 1933.
He interned at two hospitals in New York City. In 1935, he married and entered the Army as a Captain in the medical corps. He was sent to Schofield Barracks, Oahu, HA. There, he witnessed the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 - and was himself shot at, as Schofield Barracks was also attacked. He was put in command of the local civilian hospital in Honolulu.
He was promoted to Lt. Col. and in July 1944 landed at Normany, commanding the 48th Field Hospital. He led his hospital just behind the front lines through France, Belgium, and Germany.
After the War, he served as Chief of Medical Service at US Army hospitals at West Point, Heidelberg, Germany, Fort Benning, and Tripler Hosptial in HA. He served as Commanding Officer of the Army Medical Research Lab at Ft. Knox, KY and retired in 1967 as a Colonel.
His military decorations include the Bronze Star, the Croix de Guerre, (French), and awards for being under enemy fire in both the Pacific Theatre and the European Theatre.
After retirement he taught medicine at Emory Hospital in Atlanta, GA, and practiced medicine in Warrenton, VA from 1970 to 1987, primarily as a consultant reading electrocardiograms. In 1987, he moved to Charlotte.
Dr. Hoagland had more than 70 articles published in professional journals, primarily regarding his discovery of the cause and transmission of mononucleosis and uses of ritalin. A number of lay magazines ran stories on him and his discovery of 'the kissing disease.'
Dr. Hoagland is survived by his son, Robert D. Hoagland, and daughter, Cary C. Hoagland. He was predeceased by two wives, Thurma Pritchard Justus, mother of his children, and Louise Hobart Walker.
He was a devout Christian and set the example by his life.
