Robert Poole Obituary

Robert Howard Poole, Jr.

September 22, 1928 - November 3, 2024

Charlotte, North Carolina - Robert Howard Poole, Jr. DDS, MSCO died on November 3, 2024, at age 96. Bob was a loving husband, father and grandfather who enjoyed a lifetime with family and friends.

Bob was born in Wade, N.C.; grew up in Elizabethtown, N.C., son of Reverend Robert Howard Poole, Sr. and Janice Neel Poole. His father, a Presbyterian minister, and mother served several communities in North Carolina.

In 1951 he graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. degree. Further he graduated from UNC School of Dentistry in 1956, practiced dentistry, returning to Chapel Hill to graduate in 1964 with his Master of Science in Orthodontics. From 1964 to 2006 Bob practiced orthodontics in Charlotte, N.C. and Rock Hill, S.C. prior to retirement.

Prior to pursuing his undergraduate degree, Bob served and was a veteran of the United States Army.

Bob was an avid Tarheels football and basketball fan. He enjoyed a lifetime of golf. He was always ready to take on a challenge and full of fun and adventure like the time he took a helicopter ride to see the Christmas lights of McAdenville - that was one way to beat the traffic! He was an inventor – attaching flashlights onto his rollator for early morning walks (we should have patented that one!).

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his son-in-law, Thomas Cecil Jackson. Bob is survived by his loving wife, Birshal, of seventy-one years; four children – Jan Poole, Beth Poole, Robert Poole and his wife, Tracy, and Nancy Jackson all of Charlotte. Also, two grandchildren, Brandon Poole and his wife, Lauren, of London, England and Kristen Poole of Charlotte. And many nieces, nephews, cousins and a sister-in-law. All of whom will miss him greatly.

A service to celebrate Bob's life will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, November 14, 2024, at First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte, 200 W. Trade Street, Charlotte, N.C. The family will receive friends following the service in the Wood Fellowship Hall at the church.

A gift in his memory can be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Charlotte Television Ministry, St Jude's or to a charity of your choice.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28204 (704) 641-7606. Online condolences can be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

I work with Dr. Poole's daughter, Beth, and remember Dr. Poole fondly. He was kind and he was a gentleman. He loved his family and he greeted everyone with a warm smile. I attended a funeral with him once and he must have greeted 100 people that knew him from his days as an orthodontist. And I don't think I've ever seen him without a bowtie : ) Praying for his family as they grieve and rejoicing with them on a life so well lived and his homecoming.

Dr Poole was my Orthodontist back in the mid 70's. A lovely, gentle man. I still have the sheet of paper he handed out to his patients which depicted "Teamwork." We were in the journey to straight teeth together; I never forgot that.

Rest peacefully, Sir.
