Roslyn Brookshire Obituary

Roslyn Houston Brookshire CHARLOTTE - Roslyn Edwina Houston Brookshire (Punkin), after 71 mostly wonderful years, died June 7th, 2013, of brain cancer while surrounded by her family at home. Punkin was born in Atlanta, Georgia, on April 9, 1942, the daughter of the late William James Houston and Edwina Lamar Ison. She graduated from The Westminster Schools in Atlanta, GA, attended Hollins College in Roanoke, VA, and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1964 with a B.A. in English. While in Chapel Hill, she was an officer of the Graham Memorial Student Activities Board, a sister of Pi Beta Phi sorority and a member of the 1963 Homecoming and Yack Courts. She lived and worked in Atlanta until marrying Stan Brookshire in 1983 when she moved to Charlotte with her children. She was a founding and devoted member of the Burning Loins Book Club. In addition, she was a member of The Nourish and Flourish and Mille Fleurs Garden Clubs and the German Club. Punkin was an active member of the Myers Park Presbyterian Church where she served as a Deacon, member of the AIDS Task Force and the first Regional Aids Interfaith Network caregiving team. Whether on the beaches of Kiawah or the mountains of Blowing Rock, Punkin found immeasurable joy spending time with her friends and family and, in particular, her six grandchildren. Mrs. Brookshire is survived by her husband, Stanford Raynold Brookshire, Jr.; two daughters and their husbands, Roslyn Moore Jaegers (Eric) of Charlotte, NC, Lisa Moore Frierson (Joseph, III ) of Athens, GA, and step-daughter Kathryn Brookshire Brown and her husband (Denis, IV) of Salt Lake City, UT; one sister, Barbara Houston Womack (Kenneth) of Marietta, GA; brother-in-law, George Edward Patton, Sr. of Lilburn, GA; sister-in-law Carolyn Brookshire Sachsenmaier; one niece and one nephew; and six grandchildren, Lucy, Joseph and Jane Frierson, Jack Jaegers, Harriet and Wyly Brown. Her sister, Nancy Houston Patton, and her step-son, Stanford Raynold Brookshire III, preceded her in death. A celebration of Punkin's life will be held on Tuesday, June 11, 2013, at 11:00 a.m. at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, 2501 Oxford Place, Charlotte, NC. It was my great pleasure to know and love Punkin. She was a most generous volunteer and leader in the early formation of RAIN. She gave so much to the organization and to our Care Partners. I have a treasured photograph of Punkin and her Myers Park Presbyterian Care Partner, Dannie Cornelius on my desk. I will never forget all that she gave to me and to RAIN.

I send my prayers of comfort to you all.
Love,
Debbie Warren

Punkin was a true Southen Lady in every respect. We were neighbors and I never saw her that she didn't have a kind word.
As President of our HOV, she helped laid the foundation of WhiteHall. We still enjoy the building blocks of her wisdom.
Punkin will surely be missed.

Our prayers are offered to God today for her family and especially Stan for a peace that passes all understanding.
