Waxhaw, North Carolina - Ruth Wingard Sensenbrenner, 92, of Waxhaw, NC died peacefully on January 3, 2021 after a long illness.
Born on December 30, 1928 in East Spencer, NC, she was raised by her parents, John Ralph Wingard, Sr. and Mae Earnhardt Wingard, on their family farm in Waxhaw, NC.
Ruth graduated from Concord High School and Lenoir Rhyne College. She moved to Atlanta after college where she worked as Director of Christian Education at Redeemer Lutheran Church. She met her husband, Bill, there and they returned to Waxhaw to raise their family. She was a life-long Lutheran and Charter Member of Christ Lutheran and Cross and Crown Lutheran Churches in Charlotte, NC and Amazing Grace Lutheran Church in Waxhaw, NC.
Ruth was a talented educator and shared her skill with many schools and churches throughout her life. She was a school teacher and Christian educator who taught countless confirmation classes, Sunday school classes and Bible studies. She was also a talented seamstress and shared these talents generously with family, friends, and community.
Upon retirement, Ruth and Bill moved to 'downtown' Waxhaw where they helped raise their grandchildren with the same love and guidance they raised their own children. She was Mimi to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren as well as many other children and she loved each one.
Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, William H. Sensenbrenner in 2016. She is survived by her brothers, Ralph and Earl Wingard; her daughter Anna Sensenbrenner Quackenbush (Glenn); her son Dr. John Sensenbrenner (Kim); her daughter Alice Sensenbrenner Howie; seven grandchildren: Will Howie, Matt Moore, Hank Howie, Adam Sensenbrenner, Kate Howie McAteer, Eric Sensenbrenner, and David Quackenbush; and six great-grandchildren: Julia, Raleigh and Francie Howie, Heath McAteer, Hugh Howie, and Ruby Sensenbrenner.
The family sincerely thanks the staff of White Oak in Waxhaw, NC and Hospice of Union County for the care they gave Ruth the past 18 months and especially during the pandemic.
The burial will be private at Waxhaw Cemetery. A Celebration Service of Life will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to Christ Lutheran Church Habitat for Humanity Fund, 4519 Providence Rd, Charlotte, NC 28226 or Waxhaw United Methodist Fixing It for Christ Fund, PO Box 9, Waxhaw, NC 28173.

John:
Very sorry to learn your Mom passed away. She led an incredible life. Our parents generation gave us so much and we were so fortunate to be the children of so many wonderful people like your parents. You are in my prayers.

Ruth was a true Christian lady. Her knowledge of the Bible was almost unprecedented in it scope of understanding. Her sweetness and kindness was always right there to share with you. When my wife died, Ruth helped me write the service. She was such a wonderful person. We had many hours talking about family history and the Lutheran church. She was truly a marvel of knowledge and had the ability to share it with others. The world has truly lost a deep source of knowledge and love. I have lost a good friend.

Mrs. Sensenbrenner was a wonderful teacher and good friend to my Mother as they taught together for many years at Providence Day. They don't make teachers like this anymore.
