Samuel Smalling Obituary

Samuel Gregg Smalling, Jr.
Mr. Smalling, 77, of Charlotte, died Saturday, January 13, 2007 at Carolinas Medical Center - Mercy.
The family will receive friends from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m. Monday, January 15, 2007 at McEwen - Mint Hill Chapel. A funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, January 16, 2007 at the funeral home chapel with Reverend Ken Lida officiating. Interment will follow at Sunset Memory Gardens.
Mr. Smalling was born November 19, 1929 in Bristol, TN, son of the late Samuel Gregg Smalling, Sr. and Ennis Wanda Gobble Smalling. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his beloved wife of fifty years, Barbara Laughrun Smalling. Mr. Smalling was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served his country during the Korean Conflict. He was a graduate of Duke University and received masters degrees from East Tennessee State University and University of North Carolina - Charlotte. Mr. Smalling retired as a Counselor from Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools with over twenty-one years of service. He was a member of Wilson Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Mr. Smalling is survived by his daughters, Mary McCall of Matthews, NC and Martha Gibson of Asheville, NC; grandchildren, Scott Strange, Amanda Gibson, Jessica McCall, Alicia McCall, and Matthew McCall; sister-in-law, Marlene Smalling of Bristol, TN; brother-in-law, George Laughrun and his wife, Carolyn of Charlotte; sister-in-law, Lena Laughrun of Gastonia, NC; and by many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews in his hometown of Bristol, TN.
Memorials may be made to the National Kidney Foundation, 5950 Fairview Rd., Suite 550, Charlotte, NC 28210.
