Solomon Levine Obituary

Solomon Levine
Mr. Levine, 89, of Charlotte, N.C., passed away on February 18, 2011 at his home. He was born on November 1, 1921 in Brooklyn, N.Y., eldest son of the late Max and Anna Levine. Sol was predeceased by his beloved wife Shirley Pizer Levine and his dear brothers, Abraham and Howard.
Sol attended the University of Illinois, but left after his third year to enlist in the army. He served in the Pacific forces during World War II and retired as a Captain. After the War, Sol earned his law degree from Duke University. Sol and his wife Shirley moved to Charlotte in 1948 where he began his law practice with Arthur Goodman Senior. He practiced law in Charlotte for over 50 years.
Sol took great pleasure in the everyday aspects of life and in reaching out to help other people. According to his daughter, Risa Graff, 'He never turned down anyone who asked for his help.' He loved spending time with his children and grandchildren, and delighted in seeing their accomplishments in the community and watching them participate in sports. Sol had a steadfast belief in God and prayed daily - beginning with his Bar Mitzvah at age 13 and continuing even when he was unable to pronounce the words aloud.
Sol deeply enjoyed being a leader in the Jewish community. During his 63 years in Charlotte, he served as President of Temple Israel, President of the former Amity Country Club (predecessor of the Charlotte Jewish Community Center), President of B'nai Brith Men, and of the Jewish Federation. He was given the honors of 'Life President' of Temple Israel and Honorary Life Time Board Director of the Jewish Community Center. He also took part in the Charlotte Bar Association volunteer program, and he delighted in his weekly visits to an elementary school where he read stories to first and second graders. Sol loved life and will be greatly missed.
Sol is survived by his longtime friend and loving partner of 6 years, Paula Musler; his daughter, Risa Graff and husband Lloyd, sons, Miles Levine and wife Debbie, Eric Levine and wife Nancy, Jonathan Levine and wife June; grandchildren, Sarah Graff and husband Scott Roy, Ari Graff and wife Elissa, Noah Graff, Alyssa Levine, Diana Smith and husband Brennan, David Levine, Rachael Levine, Andrew Levine, Evan Levine, and Caroline Levine; great grandchildren, Eliana Roy, Chava Roy, Orli Roy, and Logan Smith.
A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, February 20th at Temple Israel, 4901 Providence Road. Interment will follow at the Hebrew Cemetery. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Shirley and Sol Levine Teacher Education Fund at Temple Israel or the Charlotte Jewish Community Center.
J.B. Tallent Funeral Service is assisting the family.

Your family is in my thoughts and prayers. Sol was a wonderful person. I knew him from many years ago when he and Mike Shulimson used to eat lunch together at the cafe in the building on Trade Street & then later at the building on McDowell Street. He was a very kind person and will be missed.

I was saddened to read about Mr. Levine's death. I was out of town this past weekend and only learned about his death today. Otherwise, I would have attended the service at the synagogue on Sunday. I enjoyed knowing him, talking about the law with him, and seeing him in the Cameron Brown Building for the past 20 years or so. So many of the "grand old men" of the bar have died recently - Mr. Sturges, Mr. Van Allen, and now Sol. Miles and Eric, my deepest condolences. Martin Hunter
