Sylvia Edwards Davis

1943 - 2018

Sylvia Edwards Davis, 74, of Monroe, passed away Tuesday, August 14, 2018.

A memorial service will be held 2:00PM Saturday, August 18, 2018 in the Gordon Funeral Chapel 1904 Lancaster Ave. Monroe, NC 28112, with the Rev. Mary Morrison officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the funeral home.

She was born August 18, 1943, a daughter to James Clayton Edwards and Hallie Mae Edwards, Sylvia was the third of four children. She grew up in Union County and graduated from Piedmont High School in 1961 as part of the first graduating class. She married the love of her life, Richard Davis in 1964. Sylvia leaves behind her husband of 54 years, Richard Davis, her daughter Shelley Hopkins (Kevin) and her son Richard Davis II (Heather). She also has 5 grand children and one great grandchild. William Joseph Hopkins, Anna Hickman (Dathan), Laura Gray Hopkins, Rebekah Mounts (Shane), Claire Davis and Landon Mounts. She also has two sisters, Bobbie Slaughter (Ted) and Elizabeth Sheeks (Kelly). Her brother Sam Edwards preceded her in death in 1991. She loved her family and will be deeply missed.

Sylvia Davis was a lover of books, learning and the great outdoors. She was an enthusiastic partner with her husband in many adventures. They travelled across the country multiple times, raising their family in the midst of all their adventures. Sylvia and Richard along with their children explored North Carolina, Montana and many wild parks and woods throughout the country. They hiked, camped, backpacked, and kayaked all through the years together. Richard and Sylvia moved to Montana after retirement, and lived in a log cabin west of Yellowstone. Some of their best memories and adventures took place in this home as they experienced snowstorms, bison herds in the driveway and yard, and bears on the porch as well as many hikes. Sylvia enjoyed sharing her love of nature with her family, her children and grandchildren. Sylvia was an explorer and a naturalist. She loved growing things, as seen in both her gardens and with her children. She could grow gardens in NC as well as in the high altitudes of their Montana home, persisting with tomato plants until she became the first person at her elevation to produce a tomato. As a mother she let us grow by providing the essentials and allowing us to follow our own natural paths. Mom loved nothing more than dad, the family, exploring outdoors, books and gardens. We all will honor her memory by following the example she set.

She will be deeply missed.
