Theodore Demas Obituary

Theodore James Demas "T.J." CHARLOTTE - Theodore James "T.J." Demas passed away peacefully in Denver June 19th, 2016, after a 2-year battle with esophageal cancer. Following a bone marrow transplant in 1991 to conquer Hodgkin's disease, T.J. had been cancer free for 25 years; taking every advantage of the life he was given. With Dawn, his wife of 21 years, T.J. raised twin children, Alex and Rachel, in Charlotte, NC and Aspen, CO. Skiing in the winter, Maroon Bells hikes in the summer and shooing hungry black bears out of the kitchen were frequent family activities during nine treasured years in Colorado. T.J. excelled at every sport (except golf), with soccer being his true passion. An intrepid traveler, he often combined his love for sports and travel by attending college and professional sporting events around the world, including two Super Bowls. In 1989, T.J. earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in Economics and International Studies. After graduating from the Wharton School with his MBA in 1995, he built a successful equity investment career at American Century Investors in Kansas City and then as a consultant to Friess Associates before founding his own firm, Aspen Edge Research. With his strong entrepreneurial streak, T.J. also started several ventures that were ahead of their time, from investing in numeric domain names to real estate development in Aspen to the design and development of a seven time zone watch. T.J. is survived by his children, Alex and Rachel Demas, and their mother, Dawn Demas, of Charlotte, NC; mother, Kathy Bloom Davis, of Myrtle Beach, SC; father, Dr. Ron Demas (wife Sherry), of Wilmington, NC; brothers, Chris Demas (wife JoCarole), of Middletown, MD and Andrew Demas, of Crumpler, NC and numerous extended family and friends. Although he was born at Duke University Hospital, T.J. will forever be a Tar Heel and greatly missed by all.
