Thomas Clark Obituary

Thomas F. Clark
October 19, 1928 - January 14, 2022
Davidson, North Carolina - Just like his famous figurine sculptures, Dr. Thomas F. Clark reached his final Retirement Tier Friday, January 14, 2022 at 9:26am.
Dr. Clark was a great teacher. He taught and performed and challenged and charmed us in the classroom at Davidson College, and then parlayed that experience and knowledge into his sculpting which won him international acclaim. Although small in stature, in reality, he was larger than life. Even in the very first year of his career as the "Gnome man" he was acclaimed by one of the most prestigious publications in the figurine industry to be "Already bigger than Norman Rockwell - an American Treasure". At prestigious Davidson College he was very simply one of the most popular professors ever to walk the halls and enlighten the classrooms of the iconic Chambers Building. In the classroom his performances were the eclectic mix of William Shakespeare, Don Quixote and Woody Allen. For some it was pure academic delight; for others a
life changing experience, but for all it was more entertainment than anything else AND it was Great Entertainment. He knew every student by their full name and quite a bit about each individual. And more than anything else wanted to be your friend as well as your mentor. He always had impeccable manners and always knew the right thing to say - never condescending - and was always positive and encouraging in his associations with students and later the collectors of his artworks.
Dr. Thomas Fetzer Clark, a.k.a. Tom Clark, a.k.a. T-Bird Tommy, spent his life entertaining and enlightening literally millions of people, first as a kindly sought-after professor of religion, then as American Artist extraordinaire, producing thousands of sculptures and hosting hundreds of artists appearances worldwide.
That he retained his generous, courteous charm and charisma through such dedicated expense of his time is a great tribute to his selfless devotion to his Art and his Public. No one worked as hard as Tom Clark. He was a demanding task master. His labor of love brought him to collectors during the weekends and to a sculpting table during the week. Friday through Saturday, meeting collectors, signing statues; Monday through Friday (with a rare week off here and there) at his easel creating hundreds of artworks. "I work very hard.
Sometimes I feel the collector doesn't quite understand just what it takes to do what I do - the sculpting and the personal appearances. But that is OK. I have often said it has taken me a lifetime to create any one sculpture. I am very pleased that in my life, I have been able to give something of myself particularly my philosophy that basically we are all part of the same world and ALL good at heart. To be aware that so many people are pleased to receive my work is the most reward in life I need. For people not to know what it really took to get here, it doesn't matter."
The least self-promoting individual ever encountered, it is like him, no it is him to be generous sharing his success with Cairn Studio and his adoring collector following. To be gracious and generous was asintegrala part of Tom Clark as was his great talent. He would have it no other way and every wonderful sculpture he produced was a reflection of the attitude, the art, and the man.
Dr. Clark had more registered collectors and a larger following than probably any other sculptor in the world today, and, as a lasting and fitting tribute to his great talent and success, was featured in literally thousands of newspapers, journals, magazines, and other periodicals as well as, numerous radio and television features.
As far as accomplishments and accolades are concerned there are far too many to list here and they never were that big a part of this very humble man.
We are all going to miss Tom Clark, his warm and gracious attitude, his spirituality and his self-deprecating wit and humor - But the legend lives on!

I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Tom Clark's passing. I have had so many years of pure pleasure enjoying my gnomes that Tom made. We had Tom Clark Gnome club here in Kansas and whenever he had shows in our area we were asked to come and join him and help out during the show. He was such a sweet kind gentle man and we loved helping him. I will always treasure my signed gnomes and will never forget this wonderful "friend". Go rest now with your God in Heaven, Tom Clark. Thank you for our little gnome friends.

It has been one year ago today that a friend and very gentle gentleman went to be with God. We enjoyed 35+ years of creating fond memories with you Tom and enjoying all your statues and gnomes. We miss you and you will always be in our hearts.

A couple of my friends gave me my first Tom Clark sculpture and I know I have about 200 not a lot by the number Tom Clark created. I love the uniqueness of the stories, the coins and the appearance of each piece. My granddaughter made red gnome hats in different sizes to fit over whatever size they were. I put them on all my gnomes for Christmas. I also went to a studio that was his home or use to be his home. I met Tom at a sculpture signing. So sorry to hear of his passing but he touched a lot of collectors and they will never forget him. Nancy McNeil, Ocean Isle Beach, NC

The best memories of my business, as a boutique owner, in Forestville, N Y are those that include Dr. Thomas Clark and his wonderful artwork. Together, we supplied many collectors. He was always so generous with his time, when I had a signing by him. All my sculptures are signed by my favorite artist. I am so sad to hear of his passing. We lost the most genuine man I have ever met and oh so kind.

Feb. 11, 2022. I just found out that Dr. Clark had passed, and a cornucopia of warm memories began to flow. How does one describe a man like this? The superlatives abound, but I like to think of Tom as the most genuine human I ever met. I was a Cairn Studio Representative in the early 1990´s in Southern Nevada and had many occasions to spend time with Tom as he travelled extensively in those days. I could extol his virtues for many paragraphs, but simply said... both a tear is shed, and a smile is showing just because I knew him. God bless you, Tom.

My love for my Father's first cousin goes back over 50 years. From the first time I met him and his wonderful creatures of the forest until the last time I saw him in 2019 he was always the most gracious and loving man around. My mom was his biggest fan, and used to make trips from Raleigh to Davidson to his store and studio to see his work and would inevitably end up purchasing Gnomes for all of us (and of course Tommy, being Tommy, always gave mom a BIG family discount!). I have them all over my house and now each time I spot one I think of him, which makes me happy. He lived a good life and was loved by many, and he always made time for his family. His smile will be missed. Rest in peace, cousin.

I will miss my cousin I called " uncle Tommy". He was the best man at my wedding flying to London England to be with my wife and myself at our wedding. A greater friend I´ve never had. A sweet, gentle man that truly cared about people. A brilliant man that loved life and loved learning. Saying I will miss him doesn´t properly express the void created by his passing. Good by my great friend. Your memory will live on through your art and in the hearts of those lucky enough to have known him.

My condolence to the world having lost a special man and artist. One of my cherished memories is his signature and date on Bride and Groom for my wedding cake topper. I will miss his wit and artistry. RIP.

To me Tom Clark was a giant of a man. My late husband and I considered him our friend. I sold his gnomes in my shop in the early eighties. We also covered his furniture at his home as well as his mountain house.
He came to the shop once for a personal visit to meet customers and sign their gnomes. He was a GREAT person and will be missed by so many.
I treasure his creations of art.
