Thomas Hager Obituary

Thomas "Tom" Alexander Hager

June 15, 1949 - June 23, 2025

Charlotte, North Carolina - Thomas Alexander (Tom) Hager entered into rest on Monday, June 23, 2025, at his home. Born June 15, 1949, in Catawba County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Cloyd A. Hager Sr. and Nan Plonk Hager Ormand.

As the baby of the family, Tom was a constant source of light and joy within the family home in Hickory, North Carolina. The youngest of four, he tagged along with his elder siblings and was quick to make new friends – many of whom he kept close until his last days.

A lifelong sportsman and a well-rounded athlete, Tom could carry a quick dribble; a skill he sharpened during his younger years at the Hickory Community Center. As a student at North Carolina State University, he became an unflappable fan of the Wolfpack and forged forever friendships with a tight-knit group of Hickory boys.

Tom served several years in the Army Reserves. He attributed his drive and desire to succeed to the training he received there. He was a true patriot who held an enormous love for his country and a deep sense of gratitude for those who fought and served to protect us all.

His most sacred treasure was his family; his lovingly devoted wife, Karen, and their two children – his joy Kara, and his pride, Tyler. Throughout their 47 years of marriage, Tom, Karen, and family were drawn to music, travel, parties and events; making the Hager foursome a "package deal" at countless functions over the years. In 2019, Tyler married Mary Vincent and Kara married Scott Dunstan. The foursome had happily become six. Tom spoke proudly of his family and often commented on what a blessed man he was as he doted on his three grandchildren and two granddogs.

Much of his joy came from surrounding himself with, and mentoring Kara and Tyler's friends. His unique way of delivering humor and wisdom made it easy for him to connect with younger people. Tom's principled integrity and warm, genial nature made him an exceptionally savvy and successful businessman. Beginning in sales and advertising, Tom eventually built a dynamic portfolio of restaurants that include multiple brands and locations throughout the south, including Hickory Tavern, CharBar7, and Goldie's Music.

Hospitality was his creed in business and in life. Tom and Karen always made people feel welcome and loved in their homes and restaurants. He was an avid fisherman and aviator, and that is often where he found peace and solitude. When he was ready for company, his true pastime was gathering with family and friends.

A humble servant, Tom was relentlessly generous. He enjoyed keeping things simple and easy, and possessed a clear perspective on life and what was truly important. He had a gentle and calm disposition but made a powerful impression on all who knew him. He will be missed.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Karen Parks Hager; two children, Kara Nan Dunstan (Scott), Tyler Alexander Hager (Mary Vincent) and adored grandchildren, Savannah Reese Hager, Georgeanna Louise "Goldie" Hager, and Thomas Alexander "Tommy" Hager; sister, Harriet Smith Proctor (Dean), of Hickory; nephews, Eric Smith (Monica) and Brad Smith (Laurie); sister-in-law Gail Horton (Ed) and brother-in-law, Ken Parks (Vicky); and a number of nieces and nephews.

Tom was preceded in death by his brothers, David Plonk Hager and Cloyd A. Hager; nephew, John David Hager; and niece, Amy Katherine Hager.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 10, 2025 at Myers Park Presbyterian Church, with a celebration of life directly following at Carmel Country Club.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Folds of Honor Foundation, 6519 Lundin Links Lane, Charlotte, NC 28277.

Arrangements are in the care of Kenneth W. Poe Funeral & Cremation Service, 1321 Berkeley Ave., Charlotte, NC 28204; (704) 641-7606. Online condolences may be shared at www.kennethpoeservices.com.

Oh Tommy. What a huge void you are going to leave for so many !!! From your Carmel friends, to the Hickory Tavern and Char Bar friends, and especially those of us who had our Sunday´s at Yama impromptu dinners with all of your family who showed up !!! You were a joy to be around, kind, generous and always with a smile. I just remember you always saying "hey, boy". To all of the Hager families, Vicki and I are holding you close in our hearts and wishing you all the best, and we will HAVE to go to Yama when we are back in Charlotte, and have a glass of Chardonnay in Tommy´s honor. Rest in Peace my friend, and God´s speed. Bob and Vicki
