Wyatt Gordon Obituary

Wyatt Albert Gordon
MOORESVILLE -- Mr. Gordon, 85, of Mooresville, passed away on Monday, June 29, 2009, at Lake Norman Regional Medical Center.
He was born on November 22, 1923, in Sparta, Georgia, the second of three sons born to Jasper McCutchens Gordon and Nora Martin Gordon. Wyatt's family moved to Charlotte in 1934 where he attended public schools. In 1940 he volunteered for one year in the Army of the United States. He was due to receive his discharge on Monday, December 8, 1941. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor caused the cancellation of his signed discharge, and Wyatt served three and a half more years in the US Army Signal Corps. He saw combat in North Africa, Sicily, and Italy. After his discharge in 1945, Wyatt attended Presbyterian Junior College in Maxton, NC, before entering the heating and air conditioning business where he worked as a wholesale salesman until his retirement in 2000.
Wyatt was preceded in death by his first wife, Dorothy Gordon; and both his brothers, Jim Gordon and Richard Gordon.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Parker Denton; four children, Wyatt Albert Gordon, Jr. of Oak Island, Victoria Louise Gordon, Gary Michael Gordon both of Charlotte, Randy Alan Gordon of Gastonia; one step-son, Beecher Denton of Mooresville; seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, July 2, at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Wednesday from 7:00-9:00 PM at Cavin-Cook Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, Good Samaritan Fund, 1739 Perth Road, Mooresville, NC 28117.

I recently heard about Wyatt and am so sad for our loss. I got to know my grandfather's brother more since I was an adult and always enjoyed a conversation with him! (He was even kind enough to come out to some of my art shows/talks.) What a good man... my prayers are with the family.

My memories of Uncle Wyatt are special. My father was his older brother and our two families spent many wonderful times together. Uncle Wyatt always shared his time with the children as well as the adults. He was a caring and understanding soul that took time to explain new adventures, whether how to play pool, make ice cream or build a play toy. Nearly a decade ago when we moved to a new home Uncle Wyatt gave us a butterfly bush from their lake home garden. That bush has spread over both banks of our spring and a week ago the butterflies started appearing. We think of him each time we spot the butterflies and also of the many beautiful daylilies blooming all around their lake home. May you rest in peace.

I will miss the trips to "Camp Gordon". I won't forget the daily feeding of the ducks and catfish at the lake. The day was always ended with a ice cream sandwich on the porch. Paw-Paw gave me the encouragement to know that I can do anything that I put my mind to doing. The memories of him bring much joy to my life.

To everyone: Dad looked peaceful tonight at the funeral home. There was a picture of Dad & his two brothers, Jim & Richard when they were real young & another picture of the 3 brothers when they were in their military uniforms. I want to THANK everyone that signs the guest book online.

My father loved to tell the story of how his brother, my Uncle Wyatt, asked him to name me after him when I was born. My father told him, "I couldn't do that to him, Junior." Whenever he told this story, my father would laugh and then say that's why my middle name is "Albert."

I am Uncle Wyatt's niece, Cindy, elder daughter of his younger brother Richard. I was sorry to hear of Uncle Wyatt's passing Monday but as I told Mike, after being greeted by his Savior, Jesus Christ, Uncle Wyatt was able to see Dad for the first time in 10 years. Like Lynn I can say that he and Randy (Du-Babe as he was known way back then) taught me how to water ski. I'm sorry not to be able to join the family Wed and Thursday but know that Nancy (my mother), Leonard (my husband), and I are praying for the peace, comfort, and strength of the Lord for each and every one.

I am one of the grandchildren. My boys are two of three great-grandchildren. I love and miss my "Paw-paw". He taught me how to water ski. My cousins and I have fond memories of Christmas parties and summer vacations at Paw-paw and Betty's lakeside home. Thank you to both of them for those memories. I want all to know that my grandfather believes in Jesus and is with Him now.
Love Always,
Lynn C.
