Ed "Sonny" Diaz

1945 - 2025

Ed ""Sonny"" Diaz, 79, of Murphy, passed away Tuesday, Oct. 28, 2025, in a Gainesville, Ga., hospital.
A native of Tampa, Fla., Ed moved to the mountains of North Carolina in 2001.
Ed served in the United States Navy as a Hospital Corpsman during the Vietnam Era, serving on the USS Shenandoah in the Mediterranean Sea.
He ran the lab at South Florida Baptist Hospital in Plant City, Fla. Ed also worked as a ship chandler with his brother, Robert.
He was baptized at Edgewood Church of Christ in Lakeland, Fla., and he became a member of Murphy Church of Christ after moving to this area.
He was an avid bass fisherman, and he loved to teach others how to fish.
Ed was a devoted husband, father, brother and friend.
He was the son of the late Eddie and Celia Diaz. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Robert ""Bobby"" Louis Diaz and David Richard Diaz.
Surviving are his wife of 34 years, Connie Sue Diaz; a son, Marco Diaz and wife Tammy; a brother, Michael Dennis Diaz and wife Brenda; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; a niece, Angela; a nephew, Dennis; and his beloved kitties, Jazz and Jezebel.
A graveside service will be held at a later date at Georgia National Cemetery in Canton, Ga.
The family requests memorials be made in memory of Ed ""Sonny"" Diaz to the Valley River Humane Society, P.O. Box 658, Murphy, NC 28906.
Ivie Funeral Home, Murphy, is in charge of arrangements.
