Rebecca "Becky" LaJuan Sweat Newton, 70, of Marble, N.C., passed peacefully and entered into the presence of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Friday, Nov. 28, 2025.
She was born in Jacksonville, Fla., on Aug. 11, 1955, and moved to Marble when she was a child. She died at home with her husband, Albert, and her son, Jack, by her side.
A member of Hyatt's Creek Baptist Church, she has been reunited with all those who have gone before her.
She is survived by her husband, Albert Newton; son, Jack Newton; mother, Lethia Cannon; brothers, Dewayne "Cotton" Cannon and Jeff Cannon; uncle, Jack Wayne Davis; her beloved dog, Luckie; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
She was preceded in death by her grandmother, Ollie Bell Davis; grandfather, Jack Davis; brother, Gary Cannon; and son-in-law, Michael Kay.
Rebecca could always be seen with a book in her hand and enjoyed romance, thrillers and horror novels, often finishing a book each day. She was an excellent cook who loved trips to the beach, fast cars (especially Corvettes), amusement parks and spending time with her family.
A graveside funeral service to honor her life will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 4, at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, 582 Greenlawn Cemetery Road, Murphy, N.C. Chaplain Donny Edwards from Four Seasons Hospice will officiate with songs provided by her brother, Jeff Cannon, and her nephew, Bronson Newton. Pallbearers will be Daniel Cannon, Dustin Cannon, Charles Garrett, Robert Garrett, Heather Jackson, Bronson Newton, Jason Newton and Jamie Reynolds. Honorary pallbearers will be Jacob Cannon, Kayla Cannon, Hope Garrett and Steve Newton.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Logan's Run Small Animal Rescue in Murphy, N.C.
Although her presence will no longer grace our lives, she will live on in the hearts of all who loved her. Her sparkle will always shine, and to see it, just gaze at the twinkling stars in the sky or watch sunbeams glittering on the water. Listen for her laughter in the songs of birds and the crashing of ocean waves on the shore, and feel her love in the warm summer breezes that touch your skin.
The family expresses heartfelt thanks to the staff of Four Seasons Hospice and Cherokee County EMS for their compassionate care and comfort throughout her final journey.
