Roy Gilbert Obituary

Roy Lee Gilbert, 90, of Andrews, passed away Sunday, Dec. 7, 2025, in an Anderson, S.C., VA care facility.
He was born in Almond, N.C., but lived most of his life in Andrews, N.C.
Roy served in the United States Army for almost eight years, was a veteran of the Vietnam War and was stationed in Fort Benning, Ga., as well as Ulm, Germany. Roy received two Bronze Star medals, The Air Medal and The Combat Infantry Badge for his involvement in the Vietnam War. He was also part of "The Big Red One" division.
Roy worked in the Andrews school system for a total of 23 years until retiring in 1989. He taught Biology, Chemistry and Architectural Drafting, but he will be remembered the most as an Agriculture teacher. Not only did Roy teach agriculture but he enjoyed farming, woodworking and being an avid rock hound.
He served on the board for both the North Carolina Agriculture Extension and the North Carolina Soil and Water Conservation Departments.
Roy was a faithful member of Andrews United Methodist Church where he also served as a chairman of the Board.
Roy was active within the community being a member of Andrews Lions Club, Andrews Rotary Club and a member of the Andrews Masonic Lodge No. 529. He also volunteered with the Boy Scouts as a Scout Master for many years.
He was the son of the late Roy and Edith Tabor Gilbert and husband of the late Louise Pauline Gilbert, who died July 29, 2025. He was also preceded in death by his paternal grandparents who raised him, William "Bill" and Wilda Mae Gilbert; and a brother, Jerry Claude Gilbert.
Surviving are his daughter, Judy Ann Nay and husband Robert "Bob" of Chattanooga, Tenn.; two sons, David Michael Gilbert and wife Cynthia of Knoxville, Tenn., and Daniel Lee Gilbert and wife Jenny of Anderson, S.C.; eight grandchildren, Jacob Gilbert, Elizabeth Gilbert Prats and husband Joe, Ruth Nay Santos and husband Jordan, Joshua Nay and wife Brionna, Rachel Nay Shelton and husband Josh, Zachary Gilbert, Andrew Gilbert and Loren Gilbert; also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Andrews United Methodist Church with Chaplain Bob Nay and the Rev. Sara Scruggs officiating. Interment will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Pallbearers will be Jacob Gilbert, Joshua Nay, Jordan Santos, Josh Shelton, Zachary Gilbert and Andrew Gilbert.
The family will receive friends from 1:30-2:50 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, at Andrews United Methodist Church prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made in memory of Roy Lee Gilbert to Andrews United Methodist Church, Andrews Senior Center or Meals on Wheels Program to P.O. Box 83, Andrews, NC 28901.

Mr Gilbert was my teacher back in 1973 at AHS. I always called him Mr Gilbert even after I graduated and anytime I saw him. It was my way of showing him respect for being my teacher and the kind of man he was.
