Margaret Burroughs
CHICAGO (AP) — A founder of one of the oldest African-American history museums in the country has died.

A spokesman for the DuSable Museum of African American History in Chicago, Raymond Ward, says Margaret Burroughs died in her sleep at her Chicago home Sunday morning at age 93.

Further details were not immediately available.

President Barack Obama said in a statement that Burroughs was "widely admired for her contributions to American culture as an esteemed artist, historian, educator, and mentor."

Burroughs founded the museum with her husband and others on Chicago's South Side in 1961.

The museum has pieces of art, exhibits on civil rights and a display on Chicago's first black mayor, Harold Washington. It was named after Jean Baptiste Point du Sable, widely regarded as Chicago's first permanent resident.

To Margaret Burroughs Family & Friends; May the God of all Comfort be with you during this sorrowful time. I met with Mrs. Burroughs twice in her office. She was humble, kind, down to earth, gracious, and encouraging. She was also a great teacher. She gave me a book entitled "Pictures of a Lonely Poet" written by William Jones, (a young man on death row claiming his innocence). She was very concerned about him and other black people in prison; and one of the ways she was helping them was by making it possible for their voices to be heard via publishing. She told me of his story, and read to me some of his poems that touched her. I walked away moved by her empathy and compassion. Here was this beautiful, famous, mature woman, successful enough to rest on her laurels; yet here she was still working untiringly trying to help those less fortunate. I was very impressed with her. She worked to the end, because with Dr. Margaret Burroughs, IT WAS ALWAYS ALL ABOUT OTHERS!

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Proverbs 16:31 relates, "Grayheadedness is a crown of beauty when it is found in the way of righteousness." Ms. Burroughs took advantage of her 93 years of life by contributing to history and leaving a legacy for others. That is why the scripture at Ecclesiastes 7:1 states, "A name is better than good oil, and the day of death than the day of one's being born." Please accept my condolences; and may the family members and friends of Ms. Burroughs have the strength and peace needed, and the love Heavenly Father has to give.

God put us here on earth, To love, to live, and to learn, To obey His Golden Rules And for Him we should be firm. He wants us to be an example Of all that He stands for, To love everyone on Earth And to have Faith and Trust and more.

We are in a way His disciples For the years we live on earth, He wants us to spread His word With compassion and much mirth. God put us here on earth, He has a reason for us being here, Our lives have a definite purpose,Trust God and never fear.

My deepest condolences to the family of Margaret Burroughs. Although I did not personally know her, I was deeply touched by her lifelong mission to appreciate and preserve all that which is positive and important about African American culture and its history. I pray for her family and that their loving memories will sustain them in the days to come. The longevity of her unselfish mission will forever keep her in our hearts.
