Allan Carvell Obituary

Allan C. Carvell, born June 3, 1920 in St. Louis, MO, he passed away Friday, July 16 at the Oakwood Senior Care in Evanston, IL. Allan was a pioneer in the Chicago area in the development of sports and recrea- tion. After a distinguished amateur tennis career, and serving in the Army Air Force in WWII, Allan began a tennis teaching odyssey that would ultimately make him one of the country's first USPTA Master Pros. He was also recognized as a member of both the Midwest USPTA and the late St. Louis Tennis Halls of Fame. Allan taught more than strokes in his lessons. He believed in a ''Recreational Church'' where he could teach people the value and skills of tennis, but also teach them life lessons that would improve their lives and the world we live in. In 1956, Allan opened Chicago's only indoor ice rink, Rainbo Arena, and operated the facility for 24 years in the wintertime. He was a founding member of the Ice Skating Institute of America, as well as its president for two years. Also he managed to own and operate the Fun Town Amusement Park on the South Side for 20 years. He is survived by his wife, June; son, Cale; daughter, Chrissy Washburn; grandchildren, Tim, Rachel and Abby Washburn and Jaryd Carvell; and great-grandchild, Annibell June Washburn. Memorial Service will be Sunday, July 25 at 4 p.m. at the Unitarian Church of Evanston, 1330 Ridge Ave. Memorials may be made to Palliative Care Center & Hospice of the North Shore, 2821 Central St., Evanston, IL 60201.

Cale and family: My condolences on your father's death....

How ironic... first Rainbo goes, and now Mr. Allan Carvell.

Thanks for the one and only Rainbo and my childhood experiences there which will last a lifetime....

Allan was a Landmark Pro. He was one of the first in Chicago to promote group tennis lessons. He was ahead of his time, because he taught the virtues of "topspin" production. Above all, he was one of the sweetest gentlemen I have ever met. Tennis has lost a bit of LOVE with his passing. ANYONE who had ever had the privilege of knowing him will attest to this.

Allan, please look at us down here, running in the heat at Lincoln Park Tennis Club and grace us with an inkling of your spirit of Love and Cooperation. Most of all, please recommend to the "Boss" who is above us all that we may use topspin in a judicious way -- to enhance the pleasure of tennis, not just for us, but for whomever we are playing. Ask that we may become one-tenth as loving in our approach to others as you. I will miss your sweet way!!!
