Arthur Whimbey Obituary

Arthur E. Whimbey, on Aug. 19, 2004. BGF Performance.com mourns the loss of Art Whimbey, thinking skills movement pioneer and author of the BGF Prototype-Construction Approach to grammar series of textbrooks, along with ''Thinking Through Math Word Problems.'' His wife, Myra J. Linden, co-authored the grammar series. Since the early 1970's he devoted his life to leveling the playing field of education with his innovative textbooks. These texts have enabled hundreds of thousands of students to realize their intellectual potential. We extend our deepest condolences to his wife, Myra J. Linden; and his sisters, Lillian DiFillippo of Key Biscayne, FL and Dr. Estella Whimbey of Seattle. A memorial symposium honoring him will be held at the Association for Behavior Analysis Conference in Chicago in late May, 2005.

I never met Dr. Whimbey but I read Intelligence Can Be Taught in the 1970s. It gave me hope that humanity is not condemned to having a median IQ of 100 with 50% of people unable to think about hard problems. We are better than that if we're given good education.

I never knew Art, except from his wife Myra whom I had the fortune to meet back in the '80s. She kept me posted on their literary works and I couldn't help being greatly impressed.

I never ceased to marvel that inspite of all his pain & suffering in his last yr, he kept moving forward with work on his books.

Undoubtedly the world will miss him even more as time passes and it becomes more familiar with his works and their impact on the field of education.

Art started making original contributions to the scientific literature while a graduate student in my lab; and continued to do so throughout his too brief professional career. Many persons can now read and think clearly who could not do so because of Årt's work. That's quite a legacy to leave.
