Dr. Benjamin Stephan, age 87, of Chicago, passed away Thursday, November 25, 2021. Dr. Stephan is survived by his lifelong partner, Bob Crawford, sister Dr. Rosita (Dr. Robert) Pildes and brother Phil (Agnes) Stephan; and loving nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Shirley Stephan. Ben graduated from Hyde Park High School; received his B.S. degree from the University of Champaign/Urbana; and, his M.D. from the University of Illinois College of Medicine in 1958. He maintained a private psychiatric practice throughout his life and headed the Department of Psychiatry at Mercy Hospital, specializing in addictions. Upon retiring, Ben enjoyed working at a mental health center for the City of Chicago. He loved going to operas, the Chicago Symphony, reading mystery novels, and playing poker with his buddies from high school. He and Bob enjoyed opening their Michiana home to friends and family. His faith was an integral part of who he was and inspired him to contribute and raise funds for Magen David Adom (Israeli Red Cross). He was an intelligent, gentle, caring man of unquestionable integrity. He enriched the lives of those who knew and loved him. Service Monday 11am in the chapel of Westlawn Cemetery and Mausoleum, 7801 W. Montrose Avenue, Norridge, where interment will follow. Contributions may be made to Magen David Adom, or, to a charity of your choice
