Dear Adair Family,

I just finished reading the letter Jim wrote to the Prospcet H.S. students. My daughter is a freshman there. She gave me "The Prospector" and said, "Here Mom. Read this." She had just read the letter herself and wanted to talk about it. She was very upset. I said OK, put it aside and continued what I was doing. Every 15 minutes she reappeared to ask if I'd read it yet. I went to bed without reading it. Today, with the kids out of the house (summer school) I had some quiet time to read the letter. Now I'm upset. I can only imagine the overwhelming pain of losing your son / brother. I pray that your friends and family stay close to you this summer to steer you through this sad time. Thank you, Jim, for writing the open letter to the students. I hope they read it and take it to heart, as my daughter has. I have another daughter a year older than Brian and a son who'll start high school in the Fall. I worry a lot about them being safe. I'm mailing your letter to my daughter away at college. She may have known Brian since she was in the class ahead of him at Prospect. She may have been one of your students? - Anne Kaeding. I hope she reads your letter, says a prayer for all of you, passes your letter on to another kid, and makes smart choices in her life.

Keeping you in my prayers,

Kirk Johnson

Jim & Grace, your horrible news is far reaching. It has been YEARS since I've had the pleasure of spending time with your family--as Jim's softball student and as babysitter to your wonderful children, most notably Brian. My parents are still by Pioneer Park there in Arlington and passed along the sad news of his untimely passing. I remember the times I spent at your house, with your children, well. Can't believe he's gone. With children of my own now, I most fear what you are going through at this time. I will pray for you feverishly, hoping that God's grace will somehow shine through and make you strong again. The glint in Brian's eye will be etched in my memory forever. May he rest in peace and be there at the gates of heaven to welcome you with open arms when your time comes to join him--not too soon. I'm imagining big hugs for your family. Hope you feel some of the love that is being cast your way by so many other mourners.

I'm so sorry. Mr. Adair is an incredible teacher to me and, I am sure, an equally incredible father. This kind of thing isn't supposed to happen to such good people, but sometimes it does. Things will get better though. The memory of Brian's personality and good deeds will echo in eternity. He had a positive impact on the world. Again, I'm so sorry. Feel better and take some comfort in the fact that Brian was a great person.

Dear Grace, Jim and family,
My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time. I keep thinking that everyone is at Gatehouse and I am going to see them. I have my good days and my bad but life goes on and sometimes there aren't any answers. My friends have been there for me in so many different ways and then there are the girls. As Caitlin said Brian and J.D. are together again but this time they are happy and healthy and with God and family. Take comfort in that. I do.

Jim, Grace and Family,

We were so saddened to hear of your loss. I have fond memories of coaching Brian on Emily's Pee Wee team, that was so much fun! Brian was a good player, and I remember him well. You may be aware that we lost Emily in August of 2006, 3 days before she was to begin her first day at Harper. So I know about the journey you are now embarking upon. Right now you may not see that road ahead but in time you will realize that you have many reasons to carry on and be strong, most notably of course your family. You will find a way to celebrate Brian's life for the wonderful thing that it was. He carries on himself, but in a different way. His spirit will be with you forever.

If there is anything I can do, please do not hesitate to call. Even it just to talk, call me. 577-4438.

Pete
