Charles Green Obituary

Charles John Green, age 88, of Lake Forest, Illinois, passed away in Naples, Florida, on Sunday, January 16, 2022.

Charlie was born on July 25, 1933, in Oak Park, IL. The son of the late Charles (Jack) and Lucile (Messenger) Green. He graduated from Fenwick High School, in Oak Park, before going on to Yale University, in New Haven, CT., graduating in the Class of 1955. At Yale, he swam breaststroke in the 1953 NCAA championships. He later received his MBA from the University of Chicago in 1961.

A respected businessman, Charlie was an insurance executive throughout his career. He was an avid sports fan of all sports but especially his beloved Chicago White Sox.

He lived in Lake Forest for the past 53 years. Upon retirement he spent his winters in Naples, FL with his wife of 62 years Mary, and his summers at their house in Sister Bay, Door County, WI.

Charlie and Mary traveled with lifelong friends to various places in Europe and elsewhere. He enjoyed spending time traveling on his many boats visiting different ports around Lake Michigan, including a trip to the North Channel of Canada. He loved to read, and when he was not doing the crossword puzzles, he always had a stack of books next to him.

Family was his greatest pride and joy. Charlie was the much beloved patriarch of the family, loved and cherished husband, father of four children and grandfather to ten, and a lifelong friend to many.

He is survived by his beloved wife Mary (Hickey), his daughter Sheila (Chris) Green Van Den Heuvel, Minneapolis, MN and her son Peter Gelsthorpe, LTJG; his son Charlie (Jill), Lake Bluff, IL and their children Jack, Brooke, and Taylor; Douglas (Andrea) and their children Chase, Charlotte and Harrison, Lake Forest, IL; and Elizabeth (Jeff) Daume and their children Sarah, Jeffrey and Andrew, Nantucket, MA.

He is survived by his brother Robert Green (Ginny), Redding, CT and several nieces and nephews. His sister Lucile Hicks and, his sister-in-law, Sister Pamela Hickey, RSCJ, both preceded in death.

Visitation will be on Friday, January 28, 2022, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. at Wenban Funeral home 320 Vine Avenue, Lake Forest, IL. Funeral mass will be held on Saturday, January 29, 2022, at 10:00 a.m., at Church of St. Mary's, 175 E. Illinois Road, Lake Forest, IL.
