Charles Vassmer Obituary

Charles Roy Vassmer, 82, passed away at his home in St. Germain, Wisconsin about 3:00 AM on June 25, 2013 due to heart disease. Charles was born October 13, 1930 in Chicago, IL to Roy Henry and Florence Ada Vassmer nee Means. Charles was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Fred and George (infant). Charles left a large and loving family - his spouse of 30 years, Gloria Vassmer (nee Lederer), 6 loving children, Mark (Ann) Vassmer, Greg (Carla) Vassmer, Chris (Dale) DuBois, Linda (Tom) Swoboda, Sandra (Cy) Nye, and Thad Vassmer; one stepson, Jim Hoffman; 14 grandchildren, David Vassmer, Jonathan (Hillary) Vassmer, Jessica (Luke) Gray, Ben (Lisa) Vassmer, Libby (Joseph Jose) Vassmer, Justin, Leah, Joseph, and Michael DuBois, Rachel and Rebecca Maurer, Emily Swoboda, Chloe and Daphne Vassmer; 11 step grandchildren, Cheyenne Hoffman, Tom Swoboda, Beth Harris, Becky Klaes, Jackie Veasey, Vicki Brown, John, Mary, Josh, Jacob, and Joseph Swoboda ; 6 great-grandchildren, Keenan Collins, Hudson Vassmer, Adler and Asher Gray; Cheyenne and Ethan Vassmer and 4 step great-grandchildren. Charles grew up with his parents and brother Fred in Chicago, New York, and New Jersey, following his dad’s jobs back to Chicago. He spent many summers on a farm with his mother’s family in Eldorado, IL where he became a Christian. In 1947 he joined the Air National Guard to “fly around to see places and make some money” and was activated into the U.S. Air Force as a rear gunner on an A-26, patrolling over most of Europe until 1952. In 1954 he married Carole Drehobl nee Snow who survives and moved from Chicago with their first 3 children to the new village of Hoffman Estates, IL. Charles worked at several companies as a credit manager while volunteering with the Boy Scouts and the Lions Club. December 18, 1975 was declared Charles Vassmer Day in Hoffman Estates in honor of his 17 years as a volunteer with the Hoffman Estates Civil Defense. He supported and raised their 6 children in Hoffman Estates, IL while enjoying camping, ping pong, CB radio, and making home movies. He married his wife Gloria in 1983 and moved to St. Germain WI in 2001 enjoying fishing, casinos, local wildlife, model ship building, the snow, and the Church until his death. Visitation will be at 11:00 AM and Services will be at noon, Monday, July 1, 2013 at United Church of Christ, 1315 WI 155, St. Germain, WI 54558. Interment will be at the St. Germain Cemetery followed by a lunch at the church. In lieu of flowers the family wishes donations in Charles Vassmer's name to the United Church of Christ in St. Germain.
