To Cheryl's Family,
Her generosity of spirit, ever-present words of encouragement, bright and infectious laugh and love of a good book, drink and sun lakeside will forever be cherished my our family. She was always kind to my beloved Grandma Van and loved Dewey Lake so obviously. I remember very clearly Cheryl saying to Meghan "look in my eyes" when a little fib was suspected of her. What a good lesson for a couple of girls to learn back then. But recently, as a parent of two young children, I appreciated her more. Always interested in our lives, always so insightful and always so encouraging, I was reminded how good I had it and how good it is to find what makes you happy. I know she was always in pursuit of joy, and I have faith she's been rewarded.
She will be sorely missed,

To Her Husband and Children,
I had the distinct privilege of knowing Cheryl Barrett for more than 25 years through my work in the probation field. We collaborated on several projects mostly in pursuit of services and programs for people in need of rehabilitation. From the moment we met, I was impressed with her devotion to her work, her boundless energy, and her perennially good spirits and infectious smile. She was an outstanding listener. Cheryl was unstintingly warm and affectionate and always recognized the work and achievements of others. She was completely modest and self-effacing about her own outstanding accomplishments. I will best and most fondly remember Cheryl not as a fellow professional but as a fellow parent. We spoke incessantly about our love for our respective spouses and children. In these conversations, Cheryl always reminded me about what really mattered: la famiglia. I can’t believe that she is gone. Heaven is now a better place.
With Great Sympathy,

To the Barrett family, I had the pleasure of meeting Cheryl several years ago through our work. I rarely got to see her but when I did she was so kind, sincere and genuine and always always had a smile! She's just one of those people who made you feel good simply by being in her presence. God bless.

To the Barrett Family,
Although I never had the opportunity to meet you, I know how much you meant to Cheryl from my conversations with her. Cheryl was the consummate professional, but more importantly, a great friend to me. While we worked together alot over the past 10 plus years on a number of projects, my fondest memories are when she and I would talk about our respective family vacations and holidays. She was not only inspirational in a professional sense, but more importantly, on a personal level. Everyone who had the benefit of having known her is a better person because of that gift. She had a rewarding career, but I know from my conversations with her that she was most proud of her family.

I met Cheryl 10 years ago when I began working at the University of Illinois Springfield as the coordinator of the Probation and Detention training. I had the pleasure of working with Cheryl on the redesign of the training and also on committees and presentations. She felt strongly about the field of probation and detention and was committed to quality training in Illinois for the profession.
But more than all that, she spoke often about her family and her faith and how it was her family and her family that gave her strength and kept her going.
She had a wonderful sense of humor and left this world much too early. My thoughts and prayers to all of you.
