Dan "Danny" Wolf, 77, proud owner of the Bagel Restaurant for 70 years. Dan was of the few child survivors of the infamous Theresienstadt concentration camp. He came to America at an early age with his family and started to help out at the original Bagel Restaurant in Albany Park, which was started by his grandparents Chaim and Elsa Golenzer and his parents, Ruth and Edward Wolf. He typed the daily menus because was the only family member that had mastered enough English at the time. Subsequently, he shepherded the Bagel through three locations, along with his late uncle Michael Golenzer, they wove it into the collective memory of generations of Chicagoans. In addition, Dan was active as local Commissioner and President of the East Lakeview Chamber of Commerce. He was a generous benefactor of many charities and causes. Dan is survived by his companion and spouse of over 60 years Mitchell Kaufman, his aunt Haya Golenzer and a host of friends who loved him. He was predeceased by his siblings Walter and Barbara. So sorry to hear about Danny's passing! He always held such a special place in our hearts. He made our Friday night trips to the Bagel a family affair! Always seating us quickly and enjoying our grandchildren! He was like extended family and will be missed! So sorry for your loss !

I just received this shocking information about Danny. Although I haven´t seen either of you recently I will never the great times that we had together... we all go back well over 45 years and I such fond memories of Danny. Long ago, I discovered the tiny Bagel Restaurant on Kedzie. I took my Bialystok-born father, Norman, there and he
confirmed the quality of the fare. When Danny moved the Bagel to a much larger location on Devon, my Dad, my mother, Thelma,
and I would dine there at least three times a week, always given a warm greeting by Danny, his mother and his sister.
One of my hobbies is writing song parodies and several years ago I was prompted to create a song to honor Danny.
The tune to use was obvious, and I know that Danny enjoyed it. After all, a taste for corned beef is something shared
by the Jews and the Irish. Having spent half a century as Danny´s dinner guest, I will miss him a lot.

So sorry to hear of Danny's passing he was such a sweet person. I started going to the The Bagel when I was in college at the Lawrence location. When my son's were little we went to both Broadway and Skokie locations. He always made a point to give my son's some special dessert and to talk to them. He will be missed.

My friends and I frequent The Bagel. I am shocked and devastated to learn of Danny's passing. We saw Danny on Thursday evening and he choose a beautiful/delicious steak for Sheryl. He was always cheerful, and welcoming when we would walk in. He was especially accommodating to my elderly Mother, making sure to open the side door, helping her inside, and finding space for her walker. I know he will be missed by all that knew him. May Danny's memory be as a blessing.

To Mitchell and Danny´s Family,
So sad and sorry for your loss. I always liked Dan, found him to be particularly kind, and admired his graceful dignity. As a newbie 6th grade transfer student to Haugan Elementary School this meant a lot to me.
I was so proud that he successfully owned The Bagel restaurants, and very much enjoyed our little chat at the RHS class reunion. He will be missed. God rest his dear soul. May his memory be a blessing to you.

Very sad news. I remember going to the Bagel on Lawrence and Kedzie with my mother. And then later in West Rogers Park on Devon Ave and I was happy when they moved to Lakeview. My husband was just in there a few weeks ago to pick up food and saw him. So Sad!

I was saddened to hear of Danny's death. I used to encounter him during frequent visits to The Bagel. He was always warm and welcoming. On one visit he graciously and without hesitation shared a secret of his chicken soup after an enquiry from me and my wife. The Bagel won't be the same without him.

The last time my husband and I ate at The Bagel on Broadway, we had a wonderful conversation with Danny. We were happy to see him there after the closure of The Bagel in Old Orchard. He was always kind and accommodating to both my young children and my elderly parents. Danny was a class act, and he will be missed.

Sending heartfelt condolences to family/friends. The Bagel has always been like a 2nd home..My parents often went to the original Bagel! My son when he was in grammar school,liked the Bagel so much that he interviewed Danny for a history project & received an A!! Danny will be sorely missed by the community!!
