David Rubens Obituary

David Lee Rubens, an accomplished musician, educator, and faithful grandfather, passed away from complications due to Acute Myeloid Leukemia on June 23, 2023. He was 81 years old. Born on February 23, 1942, David's early years were spent on Chicago's Southside until his family relocated to Glencoe, IL, in the late 1940s. It was at New Trier High School that he found his calling for music.

Further nurturing his passion, David attended Drake University where he specialized in vocal music. His dedication and talent led to a multifaceted career as a singer (baritone), director, conductor, and teacher. Whether in the rehearsal hall or on stage, David's influence deeply touched a host of students from high school to college.

It was at Drake University where David met Jan Manning, who would later become his wife. Their shared journey took them from Iowa to St. Paul, MN, then to Cincinnati, OH, and finally to New York where they lived for several years until their paths diverged leading to the end of their relationship.

David returned to Glencoe in his later years to care for his elderly parents. Still profoundly connected to music, he founded a small chamber orchestra that performed annually in the Northshore area of Chicago. This group not only provided entertainment but also encouraged the growth of local talent.

David leaves behind his sister Patricia Ann Rubens and her sons Russel and Sidney Grant; his son Michael Rubens, daughter-in-law Germaine, and grandchildren Joshua and Nia; as well as his daughter Sarah, son-in-law Danial, and grandchildren Lola and Astrid.

David's passing is a significant loss to his family, friends, and the many lives he enriched. A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family encourages donations to local music programs in honor of David's lifelong dedication to the arts.

David's passing leaves a profound silence, yet his contributions to music and his enduring legacy ensure his melody continues to resonate.

Steven Sims

July 31, 2023

My name is Steven Sims. First off, I want to send my thoughts prayers and condolences to the family. I sold David`s parents house in Glencoe and then sold him his current house in Edgewood in Glencoe as I am a realtor with @ Properties in Glencoe and that was the beginning of a wonderful relationship. We would have many talks about music and his career developing more of a friendship than a business relationship. I would visit him at his house, while he was ill, and our wonderful conversations continued. He was a wonderful kind hearted and brilliant man with music and also in life. My heart goes out to the family and I will miss him very much. Steven

I´m the other David Lee. Friends in Central and New Trier ewe went separate ways thereafter and reconnected years later due to his inherited love of clocks and my profession. Covid separated us again. We spoke a few times but my surgeries kept us apart. I will miss you my friend. I will look for you in the hereafter.
