Edward Sweeney

Edward C. Sweeney, 88, of Northbrook, passed away August 8, 2015. Beloved husband of Catherine Sweeney; loving father of Michael (Margaret) Sweeney, Kathleen (John) Caswell, and Jennifer (Thomas Bensfield) Sweeney; caring stepfather of Eileen White and Vincent Dougherty; and proud grandfather of Erin Sweeney, Riley Sweeney, Kenneth White, Conor Sweeney, Jason Caswell and Caitlin Caswell. Ed was preceded in death by his brother, Father James Sweeney; by his sister Virginia McGregor; and by his son Patrick Sweeney. Ed was a graduate of De La Salle High School and Loyola University, and was a lifetime resident of the Chicago area; he lived in Riverwoods for decades. He was a long-time member of the National Fisheries Institute, and prior to his retirement ran a food brokerage business. He was an avid softball and basketball player into his 40s, and later in life took up golf. Throughout his life he enjoyed singing, including at family gatherings and with the Hummers and Strummers. There will be a 10 a.m. funeral mass on Friday, August 14 at Holy Cross Catholic Church, 724 Elder Lane, Deerfield; family and friends may meet in the church's gathering space beginning at 9 a.m., where pictures and other remembrances of Ed will be displayed. Interment will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions to the Alzheimer's Association, 255 N.
