Edwin Hawkins
1943 - 2018
BORN
August 19, 1943
DIED
January 15, 2018
NEW YORK (AP) — Edwin Hawkins, the gospel star best known for the crossover hit "Oh Happy Day" and as a major force for contemporary inspirational music, died Monday at age 74.

Hawkins died at his home in Pleasanton, California. He had been suffering from pancreatic cancer, publicist Bill Carpenter told The Associated Press.

Along with Andrae Crouch, James Cleveland and a handful of others, Hawkins was credited as a founder of modern gospel music. Aretha Franklin, Sam Cooke and numerous other singers had become mainstream stars by adapting gospel sounds to pop lyrics. Hawkins stood out for enjoying commercial success while still performing music that openly celebrated religious faith.

An Oakland native and one of eight siblings, Hawkins was a composer, keyboardist, arranger and choir master. He had been performing with his family and in church groups since childhood and in his 20s helped form the Northern California State Youth Choir.

Their first album, "Let Us Go into the House of the Lord," came out in 1968 and was intended for local audiences. But radio stations in the San Francisco Bay Area began playing one of the album's eight tracks, "Oh Happy Day," an 18th century hymn arranged by Hawkins in call-and-response style.

"Oh Happy Day," featuring the vocals of Dorothy Combs Morrison, was released as a single credited to the Edwin Hawkins Singers and became a million-seller in 1969, showing there was a large market for gospel songs and for inspirational music during the turbulent era of the late 1960s.

"I think our music was probably a blend and a crossover of everything that I was hearing during that time," Hawkins told blackmusic.com in 2015. "We grew up hearing all kinds of music in our home. My mother, who was a devout Christian, loved the Lord and displayed that in her lifestyle.

"My father was not a committed Christian at that time but was what you'd call a good man," he said. "And, of course, we heard from him some R&B music but also a lot of country and western when we were younger kids."

In 1970, the Hawkins singers backed Melanie on her top 10 hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" and won a Grammy for best soul gospel performance for "Oh Happy Day."

Meanwhile, George Harrison would cite "Oh Happy Day" as inspiration for his hit "My Sweet Lord," and Glen Campbell reached the adult contemporary charts with his own version of the Hawkins performance. Elvis Presley, Johnny Mathis and numerous others also would record it.

Hawkins went on to make dozens of records and won four Grammys in all, including for the songs "Every Man Wants to Be Free" and "Wonderful!" In 2007, he was voted into the Christian Music Hall of Fame. He also toured on occasion with younger brother Walter Hawkins, a Grammy winner who died in 2010.

Edwin Hawkins is survived by his siblings Carol, Feddie, Daniel and Lynette.

I just want to offer my condolences to the Hawkins Family during this time. The Love Fellowship in Philadelphia back in the 90's is something I will also remember. I'm sure that these two brothers(Edwin and Walter) are making and singing beautiful music in heaven. I always enjoyed Pastor W. Hawkins preaching when he would visit Restored Life Ministries. I pray many blessings upon the Hawkins Family

A Reminiscence

YES, thou art gone! and never more
Thy sunny smile shall gladden me;
But I may pass the old church door,
And pace the floor that covers thee.

May stand upon the cold, damp stone,
And think that, frozen, lies below
The lightest heart that I have known,
The kindest I shall ever know.

Yet, though I cannot see thee more,
'Tis still a comfort to have seen;
And though thy transient life is o'er,
'Tis sweet to think that thou hast been;

To think a soul so near divine,
Within a form so angel fair,
United to a heart like thine,
Has gladdened once our humble sphere.

Remember

Remember me when I am gone away,
Gone far away into the silent land;
When you can no more hold me by the hand,
Nor I half turn to go yet turning stay.
Remember me when no more day by day
You tell me of our future that you plann'd:
Only remember me; you understand
It will be late to counsel then or pray.
Yet if you should forget me for a while
And afterwards remember, do not grieve:
For if the darkness and corruption leave
A vestige of the thoughts that once I had,
Better by far you should forget and smile
Than that you should remember and be sad.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

Edwin and Walter Hawkins were two of my favorite Gospel artists! I grew up listening to Edwin and Walter's music as a teen! Edwin was a musical icon and should always be known for being the architect of contemporary gospel music. Before there was a Kirk Franklin or a Tye Tribett or any urban contemporary gospel artist there was Edwin Hawkins! You will be missed.

This candle will never go out. I met Mr. Hawkins as well as Walter. I taught at one of the workshops in Oakland. He and his brother had the best in gospel music teaching skills. They taught with precision. I also sang in one of the Music and Arts Seminars live recordings. My friend Alice Gill introduced me to Edwin. She is one of the original Gill Singers. She is the only one as well as her sister Barbara who I know who sang on the recording Oh Happy Day. I was in Rite Aid Pharmacy in Seattle and it came over the loud speaker. I was praising God right in that store. He came to Seattle and we performed with him. Thank you for all you did for gospel music.

At the University of Alabama circa 1970, a few Afro-American students started singing in our music room in Tutwiler Hall. The Afro American Association choir was later formed. One of the first songs sung by the AAA Choir was "Oh Happy Day". Later in 1980, I attended services at The Love Center, Oakland, CA. Two years ago I attended the 45th Anniversary of the AAA choir and once again with the original group sang "Oh Happy Day". Thank you for a life of inspiration. You will be missed. We lift his family in prayer. Thank you for the life and song of Edwin Hawkins.

It's Your Turn
The voice you're use to hearing, I silenced for a time.
Their earthly work was finished, so let me tell you why.
I'm raising up new soldiers, to meet a great demand.
To free those from a bondage, that plagues my earthly land.
You know I never promised, this work would be a breeze. Your loved ones used to fast and pray, thats why you're on your knees. Deliverence was massive, and their chapter was complete. Their legacy of prayer has you prostrate at my feet. So many more need freedom, that's where your work comes in.
One day you'll be in glory, that's when your chapter ends.
May the life and legacy of Brother Edwin Hawkins live on. God bless the entire Hawkins family.

My heart was heavy after hearing the loss of the great Edwin Hawkins. My prayers for the family. His transition came on my birthday, which reminded me when I met Edwin Hawkins while working at the front desk of the hotel where he was staying, on my birthday about 25 years ago in Atlanta while preforming in a play. He suggest to come and see the play, however unfortunately I had to decline,(unavailable funds) but expressed how I have enjoyed and love his telent since I was a young child. Then he offered tickets to the show for my birthday asked for my name but never wrote it down. I went to Will Call and bless his heart there were ticket for me, front row center. Being in front of greatness of delivering the word in song, I have never desired to be on the front row of any other show. You can't top what Edwin Hawkins delivers. God has ask for his musical genius to come home, job well done.
