To my dear sister Fe,

Your physical presence is not here but I know in spirit and remembrance you are always watching and helping me and my family. You don't miss out on anything. Sometimes you are the one even telling things to us by seeing you in our dreams. Thank you for all of these most especially your recent reminder of Maribeth. I still miss talking with you. Dearest sister,

It's been a year since you left. I still can not believe you did. There are times I still got the urge to call you at work during lunch. I know you're not there. Neither you are home. Tears still run down my cheeks realizing there won't be any answer. I pray with your guidance I will heal over time. You are my angel and I know you are helping me.

Your loving sister

When Life Gets So Hard...

I wanted to find some words on a card.
That would help to get thru it when life gets so hard.
It seems you can't bear it - perhaps can't go on -
When deep in the heart there's no trace of a song.

Some words that would comfort -
when late in the night the trials return and -
you're too tired to fight.
Or the tears flow so often it seems you'll run dry.
And life gets so tough that you just want to die -
Or at least go and hide -
where you're safe from all pain.
Someplace you can rest 'til you find joy again.

What are the words you so need to hear -
That will help and will heal and remove all the fear -
That builds up inside 'til you think you'll explode -
What are the words that will lighten the load?

If only I knew the right words to say.
To encourage and Bless you or comfort some way.
I know not the words but this I can do.
I shall offer up Prayers to the Father for you.

Fe, my younger sister was born Felomena Dela Pena Germino. Tatay (our father) named her after our grandfather (Felimon). On her first day (first grade) of school Fe told Tatay her name was too long for her to write. So she became Fe. She did very well in school that earned her so many honors and recognition.

After graduating (Medical Technology) from FEU (in the Philippines) at age 20 she went to the United States to train and work at St. Anthony's Hospital in Chicago Illinois for two years. When she finished her term she went back to the Philippines and work at the US Subic Naval Base (Pathology Lab). She stayed there for three years.

She then decided to migrate to USA and continue her education. She earned her masters degree in Blood Banking while working full time at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago. She transfered to Lutheran General Hospital in Des Plaines where she met and got married to Urban Bittel.

As the manager/supervisor of blood bank she had her extraordinary love and pride for her work.

My sister Fe (her name means 'Faith') was a beautiful person inside and out. She gave so much love. She will be missed by many. She passed away September 8 ( birthday of the 'Virgin Mary') at 3:20 PM Year 2002.

Dear Aning...I got such a shock when I opened my mail yesterday. I am so sorry for your loss. I will remember Fe in my prayers but also, you, for I know well the pain you are carrying. Perhaps on times like this, we console ourselves with the thought that our loved ones are now at peace and with the faith that God has called them back for they have done the mission our Lord had given them. Leave everything to HIM. He will not forsake us. I will write again soon. Take care. Love...Zeny (letter dated Oct. 6, 2002)

October 13, 2002

This eulogy was delivered on my behalf by my niece, Maribeth Navarro-Ngo.

She is the first one who ventured out of our native country where we were all born and raised. That was in 1967, right after she graduated from the university when she came to the United States as an exchange student to work at St. Anthony Hospital in Chicago.

Together with either or both of my other two sisters, she is always the first to help our parents and us other siblings. She is even the first among us and among other cousins of the first degree to marry outside of our race. That is because that is where she found her destiny.

Indeed, dear sister you are an instrument of peace. Because you give love without seeking it. You give pardon no matter how injured you get. You always provide hope and light in times of darkness and despair. And just like your name that means the same thing, you readily accept this to be your faith. There is joy in you when you can console and understand others. This is how you love others - by giving without expecting anything in return. And now dear sister, your reward in eternal life with our dearest Tatay and Nanay, you finally received. We will always love you. May you rest in peace.

October 13, 2002

This eulogy was delivered on my behalf by Aurelio, one of the surviving brothers of my dearest friend Fe.

I wish I could be here with you all to share the great memories Fe and I spent together as friends. My friendship with her started back years ago when we both worked in the U.S. Naval Hospital in Subic Bay, Philippines- she as a senior medical technologist and I as a medical transcriptionist.

Initially I did not think we had anything in common, job-wise and other personal interests, but somehow there was more to just being an acquaintance at work. We began to hang around after work, taking night swimming lessons, night clubbing, bowling, and other fun activities Subic Bay Naval Base had to offer to single girls. As Fe had always commented, “We are just young and beautiful”.

Our friendship continued on even when destiny brought both of us to the United States, Fe in Chicago, Illinois and me in the Bay area of California. Despite the distance between us, we found many different ways to keep our friendship going. To name a few: we took a cruise to the Caribbean Islands, extending a week in Florida and went cross-country driving from Chicago to Canada and New York. She also made several trips to the Bay area giving me the opportunity to take her to Disneyland, San Diego, Yosemite, Monterey, and San Francisco. She was even close to relocating to California; but her brothers and sisters in Chicago came first in her life.

One of the many vivid memories I had of her was when we spent those14 days cross-country driving from Chicago to Wisconsin, to the Niagara Falls, to Montreal, to New York, to Ohio and then back to Chicago. Throughout these days, we never stayed in hotels. Instead, we slept in the car parking it by a train station, at commuters’ park areas, and other public places. Indeed, we were young and bold. Years after, when we talked about that particular vacation, we would just laugh our hearts out reminiscing the past, realizing how stupid we were.

Fe also enjoyed the company of other friends from Subic Bay Naval Base. Every other year we would schedule a reunion among the ex-military and the civilian employees of the US Naval Hospital. Fe and Urban attended most of those reunions which, as always we would reminisce the life we had in the Philippines- and more. We were even called “morons” by those who see the child-like behaviors we displayed in public when we were having a ball. Fe enjoyed that and even brought tears of laughter when she and I relived those moments. Fe was an integral part of these organized reunions, and she will be sorely missed.

Fe was a very patient, loving, giving, and understanding individual when it comes to her family. Every opportunity she had to share and give, she would do, at times at her own expense. Money and time were never a concern, especially when the needs touched her heart and soul. I had never seen her mad, upset, or worried, probably because she had received the same treatment from her sisters and brothers. Fe enjoyed life so much, but life was too short for her.

As short life was for her, she was able to spend her fifty-seven years being part of a very loving family who cared so much for her, particularly Ate Aning who was always there for her in sickness, in health, even at the very last moments of her life. Fe found so much comfort in the company of Ate Aning. In fact, Fe had so much trust and respect for her older sister that when she knew she was very sick, the first person she called for help was Ate Aning. I knew that if Fe had a choice to be with someone in her last moments she would ask for Ate Aning. These two sisters were twins in heart and soul, and they hurt for each other and with each other. Indeed, a very rare relationship between two sisters which no one can ever question the worthiness of it. Fe also had brothers who were ready to defend her when obvious troubles surrounded her, especially Eddie. She was a friend to all, but only one dear sister to her siblings, and a very caring, loving and giving wife to Urban.

Fe, you were one of a kind. The world would be different if it had more Fe’s like you. You will be missed so much, but I know you are in a better place.

Tita Fe was one of those people who didn't really seem to have any flaws about her. She was always the caring type...selfless—one who always placed more importance in everyone else. She always had a pleasant, modest demeanor about her along with a beautiful smile on her face. Unfortunately, I don't think I really took much time in recognizing this enough about her. Though, I'm sure she realizes how deeply she was, and will continue to be loved.

Although I'm not fully aware of it, I'm sure she's still keeping an eye out for all of us.

Fe will be sorely missed. She was an outstanding blood banker, and an asset to the blood bank community. She was also a great person-outgoing, funny, and very pleasant to work with. We called Fe late at night to ask if we could spend the night to be near the airport to catch an early flight in the morning. She warmly accepted us and even cooked for us! Fe will certainly be missed, but she is smiling down on all of us from heaven.

She would always be there ready to listen and to help. And I know she will continue to be here to help and guide me. My dearest sister, may your spirit remain with us until the time we be together again.

A part of my life was taken away from me when my sister Fe passed away. She was my best friend. I will miss her. Although she is away from me now I know her spirit will always be with me and time will come that we will be together again.

My Aunt (Tita Fe) is a loving and caring member of the family. She took care of us when we're small after the death of our mother. She always remember us in her letters and telephone calls. Her untimely passing have deeply saddened our family and her friends.

My aunt was a great woman with so many wonderful characteristics. She filled a room with joy and happiness. My Tita (aunt) was always wearing a smile and always made everyone laugh. She will truly be missed in my heart.

May she finally rest in peace.
