Francis X. Mahoney

Honorable Retired Judge Francis X. Mahoney, of Freeport, Illinois, died Friday, February 3, 2017. Born in Peabody, Massachusetts, on March 21, 1922, he was the son of Joseph R. and Lucy M. Mahoney. Judge Mahoney married Ruth Lambert on December 2, 1944. Ruth died September 2, 2006. Judge Mahoney is survived by son, Honorable Judge P. Michael (Cris) Mahoney, of Freeport, and his two grandchildren, Dan (Kim) and Tim Mahoney, both of Freeport; two step-grandchildren, Julie (Matt) MacAllister, of Sycamore, and Jeff (Michelle) Pukacz, of Bloomington; his great-grandchildren, Katy Mahoney, Ian, and Andrew MacAllister, Ryan Pukacz and Jeffery Peterson; his brothers, Johnny, Tommy, and David, of Boston, Massachusetts, United States Navy Veteran. In 1964, Judge Mahoney became a Public Defender in Stephenson County, and in that same year, he was elected to the Illinois House of Representatives. In 1978, Judge Mahoney was elected Circuit Judge of the 15 Judicial Circuit in Stephenson County. FX was the first Democrat elected to public office in Stephenson county since the Civil War. He remained on the Bench for 14 years, until he retired in 1991. Funeral Mass will be 10:30 A.M., Friday, February 10, 2017, at St. Mary Catholic Church, with a visitation from 9:30 until the time of service. There will also be a visitation Thursday, February 9, 2017, from 5:00 P.M.-8:00 P.M., at Burke-Tubbs Funeral Home. Memorials have been established for Freeport Library Foundation and Freeport Catholic School Foundation in Judge Mahoney's memory. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
