George Thompson Obituary

George Elwyn Thompson, longtime resident of Barrington, was born June 6, 1932 in Oak Park to C.E. and Genevieve (nee Kaiser) Thompson. He passed away peacefully at home on June 1, 2016. Growing up he loved being a part of the bakery and ice cream brand owned by his family. George proudly attended Monmouth College where he was a member of the Fighting Scots football team and the ATO fraternity. He also served in the US military during the Korean War, and had a long career as a stock broker. George was very active in the Barrington Area Lions and Rotary Clubs. George's love of history and literature won him many games of Trivial Pursuit and Scrabble. He also enjoyed playing golf and chess. George and his wife, Sharon, were avid travelers having amassed over 30 years of terrific memories. Aside from his family, one of George's biggest passions was his beloved Cubs. He attended the World Series at Wrigley Field when he was 13 and had high hopes for this year's team! Survivors include his wife, Sharon; children, Cathy (Tom) Leahy, Jaini Thompson, George (Jo Anne) Thompson; step-children, Mike (Karen) Schwalbach and John (Shelly) Schwalbach; and grandchildren, Chanel and Ross Doree, Sami Thompson, Mackenzie, Mason, and Karina Schwalbach, who all knew him affectionately as "Pop". Mass was June 6 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Wauconda. Burial was at Windridge Memorial Park, Cary. Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation at www.pdf.org. I will never forget George's laugh...most of all, I will never forget his generosity and loyalty to family, friends and strangers alike.

His love and acceptance are a lesson for all.

Rest in Peace George.

Living in Fox Point as a child during the 1970's was truly a special time for me. The Thompsons were my neighbors and little George was my best friend. I spent a lot of time at their home and Mr. Thompson always made me feel welcome. I'll never forget that Mr. Thompson took George and I to a Cubs game (my first game) in the spring of '77. What a thrill...thanks for the wonderful memory Mr Thompson. Rest in peace sir.
