If you thought God, your mother, or lover were watching, you'd be on best behavior, right? But, that is how Dr. Greg Feldman acted always:

1) An anxious patient yelled, "I don't even know what this surgery is going to be about!" Dr. Feldman walked in, with perfect posture/composure, and calmly/respectfully drew a picture of her organs, where the cut was going to be, and explained why. She said, "Oh, okay", and went to sleep;

2) I was doing a project and didn't understand a diagnosis. Dr. Feldman opened up an abdominal CT (ex-ray) of one of my patients in the computer, and I said, "Now I get it! I'll give you credit!!!" He grinned, and walked away. (Did not know that he was a Harvard Medical grad who has written);

3) One time I saw him in the hall, and I said, "Hey, Dr. Feldman, a buddy invited me and 300 of his other closest friends to a fundraising Birthday party. When they found out that I was a nurse at Stanford, they told me to report back with the name of a single Jewish doctor". He said, "I'm glad that you have such a good friend, and had a great time. I have somebody already, but thank you for thinking of me".

When I heard that his physical being is no longer alive, I responded, "Too reassuring, level headed, and decent for this non-sensical, at times, world". What an example of how people should be treated though!

I was a med student on general surgery clerkship and had I heard a lot of good things about him from other med students who had him as their chief resident. On a call day during the weekend, I was headed to the OR for an emergency add on case dealing with an infection. Greg was also getting ready for his own case, when saw me. I introduced myself as the med student about to scrub in for the add on. He right then and there gave him his 2 minute approach to surgical antimicrobials. I thought he was amazing being able to explain antibiotics in a clear, simple, and high yield manner and how kind of him to share with me even though I wasn't his med student. And he finished his teaching point humbly by saying, "I can't say I know much of anything, but keeping in mind these few things about antibiotics helped me get by." For the rest of my surgery rotation, I kept an eye out for him hoping to "purposely" run into him again. I never did, and am sad I won't be able to anymore. From my 2 minute encounter, I can only imagine how big of a loss he is to those who knew him much longer.

I am a PACU nurse at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and had the pleasure of working with Greg. He was a very compassionate and caring doctor who was always kind and courteous to the nurses and his patients.I was on call with him on a Saturday when one of the vascular patients needed to go back to the OR for emergency surgery. Greg stayed by the patient throughout the PACU admission until the patient was ready to go back to the OR. He kept the family informed and did everything he could to make such a scary time less frightening for the patient and their family.He was so kind and caring and I know he would have become an excellent vascular attending. My heart is heavy today and I will keep Greg and his loved ones in my prayers.

Dear Sid:

We share your deep sorrow on passing of Gregory. It was a great loss to the community and is very shocking. Our heartfelt condolences and sympathy during this very uncommon ordeal of life. Life is sometimes strange, sometimes sad and sometimes very lucky experience as we all are aware. Time would heal but the healing would undoubtedly leave permanent scars in all of us and I am sure you would be able to move on as we have seen happening with most of our patients.

Dr.Feldman:
I remember the first time that i meant you..it was your very first day as an intern 5 years ago. I didnt know you very well but from the interactions that I did have it was clear that you were going to be one of the doctors that cared about his patients. You were always smiling and put your patients at ease. You will me missed. I wish there were more people like you instead of one less. God bless and may you rest in peace.

Greg, I was always so happy to see you. You made me smile and laugh even though we were both surrounded by sickness and pain most of the day in our lives as physicians in training.
I remember you teaching me how to place a foley catheter when I was a medical student... and now I am a urologist in training. You took the first steps with me when I started as a surgery intern on my night float rotation, and taught me all I needed to know about pain management in the post surgical patient. You made these lonely nights in the hospital entertaining, fun and a great learning opportunity... and of course the music was always with you. And again as my chief during my second year, I remember your daily German sentences on our sign out sheet... like "I'm too sexy for das Krankenhaus... and many more.
These are the memories I have of you, they still make me smile even though I am in tears.
Ich vermiss Dich!

I will hold on tightly to every moment I spent with Greg – even that four and half hours when he roped me into watching a Bollywood flick. Greg had an enormous capacity to generously show love to those around him. He made everyone feel truly loved by him. I thank him for all of the genuine hugs (he gave such comforting hugs) and genuine laughter. Thank you, Greg, for all of the wonderful things you added to this world.

The world was lucky to have Feldman in it. I will always cherish our times at SCV and Stanford. He was a truly great surgeon, friend, and role model. We will miss him dearly. I do not understand what happened, but know he is at peace now and in caring hands. That is owed to him for all the "caring hands" he blessed our patients with.

The world is a better place because of Greg and the countless people he touched throughout his medical career. He was truly a gem. His natural ability to teach and to inspire was profound, and he inspired me to become a general surgeon. Greg was the best clinical teacher I have had the privilege to work with in medical school. He taught me clinical pearls and surgical skills that I will keep with me forever. Greg will always be my role model for the chief resident, surgeon, teacher, and mentor I hope to become. I was blessed to be given the chance to work with him. Greg's passing is a terrible loss to the world. He will be very missed.

Dearest Greg,

I am grateful for having known you, been inspired and surprised by you, laughed and learned in your company as well as cared more because of how you made yourself available. I am saddened to tears now at the thought of your passing.

But as we spoke on more than one occasion, life is funny and unpredictable… and although the book I kept kidding you to author in the future will never be quite, pages of precious memories that lie within those you have known and touched are now being volunteered and another sort of book inspired by you is coming to fruition. Nice work Feldman.

I cherish the memories I have of you and know that in time, your words and song carried on the wind will continue to inspire us all to laugh, understand and care more deeply. Thanks in advance for the blessings my friend.

Thank you and all of the forces that made you possible. May you be blessed with peace.

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Greg's passing. Greg was my first "husband" when we staged a mock wedding while learning about Jewish lifecycle events in fourth grade at Emanuel. My husband and I even considered putting my first wedding video on my real wedding video nineteen years later. I am so glad I knew him as a child, and only wish I had the opportunity to know him as the extraordinary adult he became.

This is a travesty, and you will be sorely missed Greg. I think one of my best memories of Greg (besides when he introduced me to his parents and taught me Salsa dancing) was when he played his own remix of "Genie in a bottle" for me. I have worked at so many healthcare facilities and with too numerous Drs to count but Greg Feldman always stuck in my head as the most empathetic, compassionate, witty, and humorous person in the field of medicine. This is extremely rare in a person, let alone an MD.
