Harold Bone Obituary

Harold Wayne Bone, age 66, Chicago, Illinois, a highly decorated, retired Chicago police officer, passed away on March 17, 2021 at home with his loving wife, Audrey, by his side. Harold is survived by Audrey, his son, Brian, his daughter in law, Victoria, two grandchildren, Jacob and Blake, his brother, Robert, of Effingham, IL, his half sister, Andrea Chen, of Ann Arbor, MI, and so many extended family and friends who will remember Harold as the man who shielded and protected them, stood up for them, helped them, embraced them as family, and never stopped loving and believing in them. Harold's life was defined by his desire to make his home town of Chicago a safer and better place. He became a police officer in March of 1982 and retired 31 years later. Over the span of his career, Harold received 214 awards including 7 Department Commendations, 2 Life Saving Awards, 2 Superintendent Awards of Valor, and 2 Unit Meritorious Performance Awards. According to his former police partners, Harold was a very quick thinker who had a keen instinct for trouble and was never one to wait for the call. He always knew when a situation was developing and he was right there to de-escalate it or handle any trouble that arose. Harold met Audrey on the job. Audrey was assigned to the equine unit and introduced Harold to the joys of owning animals, many, many, animals. Brian, their son, was Harold's pride and joy. One of the proudest moments of Harold's life was when Brian became a Chicago police officer. After catching bad guys, Harold loved music, could name all of the one hit wonders and the oldies. He was also a mean 3 card player and held court at the table in Rivers Casino. When Harold retired, he left behind a legacy at the Chicago Police Department where his name is spoken with awe over his many career accomplishments. Harold leaves behind another legacy with his passing. He was a man who lived life to the fullest, fought for what he believed in and did not go gently into that good night. He would want us to celebrate a life well lived. Because of the pandemic, the family is going to hold a memorial celebration when crowd size restrictions are lifted. In lieu of flowers, Harold and Audrey request donations to either the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation or The Shriner's Children's Hospital.

My sympathy to your family. I knew Harold before he became a police officer when I was working on the 20th district tactical unit. When he became a Chicago police officer I knew that he was someone special. That he had a career and a reputation as one of Chicago's finest did not surprise me. I will always remember our last meeting so many years ago as I sat in a Las Vegas bus stop. I wish now that we had spent more time that evening talking about the past. You are a legend. God bless you.

I was reading the FOP Magazine today and was shocked to see the name, "Harold Bone" age 66 in the listing of the "Sisters & Brothers who passed". It has been said many times that Harold was "The Real Police" and that is for certain, no doubt whatsoever. That title means the world to those who have earned it and earned it he did. I had an occasion at an award ceremony to see Harold wearing all his medals and I was taken aback because he looked like General George Patton. His chest was covered with fruit salad. It was truly something to behold. Harold's son is going to have some huge shoes to fill to follow in his father's footsteps. If Brian is anything like his father though, he will be sticking his neck out trying to do what is right in spite of the dangers...both physical and mental. My condolences to Audrey and Brian in the loss of a very special man. Truly "a one-of-a-kind" police officer. The very best......

Harold and I met in 1989 when we both worked in the Gang Crime North unit. We were on HBT (SWAT) together and both were then assigned to S.O.S. Special Operations Section) , Along with many of our friends (not just co-workers) we worked the streets of every District in Chicago and every public housing complex at a time that Homicides and violent Crimes were at record level highs. While we spent most of our careers in the same units together, our families also became
Very close. Harold also worked with my dad in the 018th district before I became a cop. Now both of our sons, Brian Bone and Joe Pentimone are CHICAGO COPS. Harold and I also belonged to the greatest antique/classic car club anywhere together, the Chicago Gearheads.
Harold surprised me by driving up from Tennessee just to be at my 2nd retirement party (Fop hall), after he was already at my 1st retirement house party(where he gave a speech that included a funny war story about us). My daughter Carla and Audrey became good friends and both share a love for animals. A few weeks ago Carla and Audrey fed the deer by her house together as they hugged and cried together. That day Harold and I told each other that we loved each other but in a different way than ever before. When Audrey brought Harold to Luthern General hospital because of his unbearable pain we knew there wasn’t much time left. Harold’s friends and relatives were calling Audrey constantly, visiting Harold and saying the most beautiful things to Harold, Audrey and Brian. I know that so many people are having a really tough time accepting that Harold is gone just as I am. But Harold would never want us to waste one precious moment of our lives being sad or grieving. He lived every day to the fullest and always made everyone feel good, even when he wasn’t.
Harold, you are loved by more people than anyone could imagine.
Be at peace and rest now my good friend.
