Herbert C. Lassiter Jr.

Herbert C. Lassiter Jr., 75, of Elburn, died Monday, Feb. 10, 2003, at Delnor-Community Hospital, Geneva, after a brief battle with cancer. A 33-year resident of the area, Mr. Lassiter worked as an attorney in Chicago for many years, as well as in Kane, DuPage and Will counties. Born on July 27, 1927, in Norfolk, VA, Mr. Lassiter was the only child of Herbert C. Lassiter Sr., a Rear Admiral of the U.S. Navy, and Clara MacNeill Lassiter. He spent his youth growing up near Naval Bases on both coasts of the U.S., as well as in Hawaii. He himself joined the Navy in 1945, and ultimately became a member of the Seabees (construction battalion) building communications towers on Islands in the Pacific. After his discharge in 1947, he moved to Chicago with his parents and entered Loyola University. He graduated from the Loyola University Law School in 1951 and continued to be an active member of its alumni association. On Sept. 15, 1951, he married Geraldine Dulkowski at St. Mary of Perpetual Help Church in Chicago. For more than 25 years, Mr. Lassiter worked as executive vice president for the American Dental Association and Delta Dental Plans Association. During this time, he co-authored the non-fiction book ''Insurance for the Doctor.'' In the 1970s he moved into private law practice, specializing in personal injury, workman's compensation and real estate law. He and his wife and their four children lived in Tinley Park before moving to the Campton Township area of Elburn in 1969. He was a longtime member of St. Patrick's Church in St. Charles, and active supporter of St. Charles High School sports. A golf enthusiast and avid fisherman, he often remarked that one of the highlights of his life was being able to play a round of golf on the Old Course of St. Andrews Country Club in Scotland in 1985. In 1993 He married Nancy, nee Kier, Martin. In recent years, he semi-retired from law and often served as a legal arbitrator. At the time of his death, he was an active member of the Evangelical Fellowship Church of Elburn. In addition to his second wife, Nancy, he is survived by his children Debbie (Craig) Kenworthy of St. Charles, Kim (John) Millerick of Surfside, FL, Barry (Cheri) Lassiter of West Chicago, and Dawn (Craig) Brueske of St. Charles. He is also survived by his stepchildren, Stephen Martin and Jane (Jim) Hallford of Texas, and Carol (Jack) Wood of Florida; as well as 20 grandchildren and stepgrandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Geraldine, and his parents. A Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at the Norris Funeral Home, 100 S. Third St., St. Charles.
