Herbert L. Roth was born in Roth, Germany in 1923. Fleeing Nazi persecution, he and his family settled in Chicago, where he lived until his death on January 17, 2015. Herbert Roth was self-educated and professionally successful, but his true life's work was that of strengthening the Jewish community. He was director of the Jewish Children's Bureau for 15 years and President of Selfhelp of Chicago for 16 years. He was active in preserving the Jewish history of the small German village he fled as a child. He is survived by his brother Walter Roth, sister Helen Dittmer, his daughters and sons-in-law, Janet and Tony Walters; and Deborah and Jeffrey Roth-Howe; his five grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. His wife, Elsa, predeceased him in 2013. Funeral will be Monday, January 19, 2015 at 11:00am at Piser Funeral Home, 9200 N. Skokie Blvd. (At Church St., Skokie, IL). Dear Walter and Chaya, Helen, Debbie, Janet, and Families:
Aunt Elfriede let me know of Cousin Herb's passing a few weeks ago and I just found this online. I wanted to share my deepest sympathy and words of comfort with all of you. I so enjoyed spending time with Herb and Elsa periodically when at a conference in Chicago. May their names always be recalled for blessings.

I Just heard about Herb's passing. I worked with Herb at the Selhelp Home for close to 10 years. I can't say enough good things about him. He was a strong leader, made a huge difference there and was a wonderful mentor to me personally. I know he will be greatly missed and he will always hold a special place in my heart!!

I am so sad about this loss. Herb was so important for our work around "his" synagogoue here in Roth, where he has had his last Bar Mitzvah 1937.
I am so happy and grateful that I met him in 1996...a man with a big heart, always interested in what was going on in his small village in the last 18 years. He supported us in so many ways I will never forget!

To Herbs and Walter family members. My physical limitations prevent me from personally expressing my thoughts and deepest condolences. Herb was my friend and business associate and partner for more than half a century. As a business associates his sound decision making always led to a successful conclusion. We came to this wonderful country at the same time in 1938 and remained close personal friends from the first time we met. Herb, I will miss you and you will always be in my thought. To Herbs and Walters family Members. I want to extend my deepest and sincerest condolences to all of you. Herb was not only a good friend dating to 1939, but also my closest business associate. He was my partner for over 25 years and his business judgment and foresight assured our companies success. Due to my personal health limitations, I am unable to express directly my personal feelings and condolences, but please be assured that my personal thoughts of Herbs business judgment and his high standards of behavior will always be with me.
