Jeanne Derichs was my Freshman English teacher and my Rhetoric Writing teacher at Niles West High School. She was a great and dedicated teacher who helped me become a better writer. She was a beautiful person who was well beloved in the Niles Townhship High Schools and in Morton Grove. I have fond memories of her and it was a great pleasure to work with her as well when I returned to Niles West as a substitute teacher. She encouraged me when I was in law school. She was also my neighbor growing up n Morton Grove. She is now reunited with her husband of blessed memory in the Lords Gallery. Her memor be eternal.

Did you ever have one of those teachers that you found out about because your friends said "you HAVE to take her class"? Mrs. Derichs was that teacher. She was the teacher that brought out the best in her students, encouraging them to want to learn more, to ask insightful (and inciteful) questions, and I still think about her fondly many years later. She was truly a remarkable teacher.

Dear Derichs children and grandchildren: We are so sorry to hear that Jeanne has left us. We loved her dearly for her gardening advice, her amazing sense of humor and her Love for the Lord. She loved all of her children and grandchildren as well. She never failed to tell us all the news of their accomplishments while I filled her in on the gossip from the neighborhood. She was so very much loved and will be very much missed by this neighborhood. You have our deepest sympathy.

Jeanne was a model and mentor for me when I started teaching at Niles West. I remember her classroom wall was painted with Dante's "Abandon all hope, ye who enter here," but that only encouraged students who took her elective classes. I took over the literary magazine from her, and she gave me good advice, most importantly to have fun and not to try to control too much. I remember her ready laugh and her superb sense of style. Jeanne was firm in defense of teachers and warm in defense of students. She was sassy and righteous -- a great teacher and a great person. I am better for having known her.

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I remember both your mother and father, and was enchanted by her beautiful garden that limned a sizable yard-so lush and neatly tended. I still chuckle at the memory of her musical 'trips around the world...first stop! Sunny Mexico!!" followed by a comical rendition until your dad would relent to whatever request was being made. They really loved each other, and are together again. May peace and love heal your loss.

Mrs. Derichs was one of my very favorite teachers. She was inspiring and kind. Mrs. Derichs taught us to look for "Fabulous realities". To this day, I still do.

She also introduced me to On a Pale Horse and Dante's Inferno. Two books I still re-read every few years because I enjoy them so much

She was the only teacher who noticed I didn't show up to school for 90% of senior year.
