Jeff was a passionate, kind, thoughtful, and principled person. My main contact with him was an editor and was impressed by his talent for bringing out the best in what I wanted to express.

I just learned the shocking news about my college friend, Jeff Friedman.

I met Jeff freshman year at Brown. He was one of the smartest people I have ever met. He taught me to question every assumption I had and to become a critical thinker. He was also a lot of fun and could see the humor in his different way of looking at the world. I love our dorm-room discussions about Jeff´s world -- contracts, laws, free markets, "Austrian Economics" and the Libertarian Party. I remember walking around Greenwich Village at semester break and making a pilgrimage to Laissez-Faire Bookstore on Mercer Street. He was unique.

We went our separate ways after college but would sometimes exchange emails on the state of the world and academia. I know that meeting Shterna and sharing his passion for ideas with her was one of the great things to happen to him.

My condolences to Shterna and the entire Friedman family.

I am so shocked to read about Jeff's untimely death. I knew Jeff from graduate school at Berkeley, and I was just going through some old photos and found this one of him. I was looking online to get his email address and saw this sad news. Please accept my deepest condolences.

I met him during his years at Barnard College, where I worked as an IT administrator. He was a low tone but had a profound educational background that portrayed his deep knowledge of political philosophy in his lectures and his life within the campus and beyond it, gaining the recognition of all his students and people who were privileged to meet him. I also knew Sterna, his beloved wife, whom I admired as a student, and her attitude about life-based on philosophy in words and action. I was privileged to talk to him about one year ago remotely; I am sad about such a significant loss of humanity.
My condolence to Shterna and his parental family with friends.

I first got to know Jeff through his writing. For me, his writing was one of the first experiences I had in college subjecting one's own ideas to intense scrutiny. When I finally met him, he was incredibly generous with his time, giving me advice on applying to graduate school and feedback on my writing. I had nothing to offer besides potential but he invested a great deal in me.

Jeff reached out to me a few years ago when I was a graduate student to discuss my work and we began exchanging emails periodically over the last few years, debating ideas and discussing his fantastic book, Power Without Knowledge. He gave me advice to help publish my own book and was incredibly supportive of all my strangest ideas. I was lucky to finally spend time with him at APSA this last year and was so pleased to learn that he was as kind, incisive, and fascinating in person as he'd been in all those emails. I will miss Jeff and I hope he knew how much I appreciated his kindness and insight. My condolences to Shterna and all of Jeff's family. May his memory be a blessing.

Jeff was a friend, mentor, co-author. His incredible devotion, wisdom, understanding, kindness, and countless hours on Skype that we spent together discussing everything from Marx, Mises, libertarianism, bank balance sheet mechanics to how to eat well and recover from a personal loss had made me a better man. I am devastated, speechless, incredibly sad. RIP, Jeff. RIP, dear friend. I salute you. We will see each other again in a better world...

Devastated at these terrible tidings. I know Jeff as a vital contributor to political thought, both through his own signal ideas and his creation/deft editorship of Critical Review; as an unmatched interlocutor on seemingly any topic; and most of all as a loyal and always thoughtful friend. Heartfelt condolences to Jeff´s family and expansive circle of friends.

This is so sad. I was fortunate to be a student of Jeff´s in college and to attend one of his wonderful Critical Review seminars. He was such a devoted, generous, stimulating, and effective teacher. The world is a darker and less comprehensible place without his insight. My condolences to Shterna and his entire family.

Jeffrey Friedman improved my life. I learned an enormous amount at his Critical Review seminar in the 90s and later from his many writings. I'm very grateful to him.

I took the opportunity earlier this year to thank him for the influence he had on my thinking.

May his family, in time, find some peace.

My deepest condolences. I only knew Jeff through my sister, Sue Friedlander (now Talman), who shared a homeroom with Jeff throughout high school and who was always placed next to Jeff on the seating charts because their last names were alphabetically proximate. She always admired Jeff and was in awe of his intelligence.
