I hadn't seen John very often in the last few years, but will always remember him playing in the Friday night band at Andy's, where I spent many happy hours listening to jazz with my friends, including Vi. I agree that John was "soft spoken and a quiet man", and was always a gentlemen in the true sense of the word. We'll all miss him.

My prayers and condolences to the family. Some of the best musical memories of my life involve John and the lunches at the Sari-S. I was a student at the Chicago Conservatory and every friday I would grab a friend and head for Hubbard St. Most of them had never heard Traditional Jazz live. It was there I first heard The Original Salty Dogs, "Jack the Bear" and so many others....Sometime today I'll play Muggsy's Hot 16 and Louie's Hot 5 & 7....
