John Nicholson Obituary

John Frederick Nicholson died September 7, 2017 at his home in Naples, Fla. He was born December 19, 1927 in Minneapolis, Minnesota to Edith and Arnold Nicholson. John grew up in Rockford, Illinois. John graduated from East High Shool in 1945 and then entered the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. World War II interrupted his college years and he went into the Army in 1946 and served on Guam and Okinawa. John was a sergeant when he left the Army and then he enrolled at Northwestern University and graduated in December of 1950. John was a member of Sigma Chi fraternity. He loved Northwestern and often talked about the good friends he met there. John's working experience began at General Electric in Schnectady, New York. Later he moved back to the Chicago area and worked in the paper industry at Whitaker-Carpenter Paper Co. for 40 years. John and his family resided in Northbrook, Illinois for 25 years before moving to Naples in 1993. In retirement John kept busy playing golf and tennis. He also worked part time for the Naples Post Office and was a substitute school teacher for the Collier County school system. John is survived by his wife, Ginny, and two daughters, Catherine (Stephen) Moss and Cynthia (Cie) Nicholson, both of whom live in the New York area. He is also survived by three granddaughters, Kaylin (KC) of Washington, D.C., Kristen a student at University of Pennsylvania, and Jessica Jade who attends Notre Dame University. John was a wonderful husband and father and dearly loved his family. He was a long time member of 1st Presbyterian Church in Naples. A memorial service will be held at a later date. I did not know John's family, but I was thinking about him today. He was our paper salesman many years ago when I worked at Hewitt Associates. He was a kind and gentle man. I hope his family is doing well.

Cie, I am so sorry to learn of the passing of your dad. If you ever need to talk, I am here. Grief is a beast that knows no time and often hits without mercy. I will pray for continued healing for you and your entire family. Your stories of him help his legacy live on in the hearts of your friends. Please take care. Love, J.

John was almost always smiling, and had a friendly and mischievious twinkle in his eyes. We had many good visits over the years. I will miss him.

My heart goes out to you for the deep loss you must be feeling for your beloved. How sad to lose someone so loved and so needed. May you find comfort in prayer and in one another (Jeremiah 29: 12, 13).

To all of John's family my deepest sympathies. John was a friend of my father Dick Shoellhorn while attending Northwestern Univ together, They met up once again in Naples at the Alumnae gatherings. I met he & Ginny at church and have known them ever since! He was a great guy, big heart and always a kind word. I have missed his good humor recently but know he has gone to a better place. I am sure he will be missed by everyone. May he rest in peace.
