John O'Shaughnessy Obituary

O'Shaughnessy, John Michael
John Michael O'Shaughnessy, former Winnetka resident, passed away on May 24, 2009 in Santa Fe, New Mexico. Born on April 15, 1940 to John and Eileen O'Shaughnessy, Michael attended North Shore Country Day and Loyola Academy. He graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1963 and the ThurderBird School of International Management in 1972. While residing in the Chicago area, Michael supported artistic and educational endeavors in Chicagoland theaters, schools and churches. In 1989, after locating in Santa Fe, Michael and his wife Marianne established award winning Red Crane Books. All the books gave voice to the people of the west and reached an international readership, with some books translated into French and German. Michael was the prime photographer for Red Crane Books and some of his work was exhibited at the Snite Museum of Notre Dame and the Harwood Museum in Taos. Michael was active in many non-profit organizations and supported numerous New Mexico projects. He enjoyed helping the Taos Pueblo renovate its buildings. The Santa Fe Art Museum, the History Museum, the College of Santa Fe, the Museum of Spanish Colonial Art, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center all benefited from his generosity. The O'Shaughnessys' received the Governor's Award in 2001 and the Mayor's Award in 2000 for their contributions to the arts in New Mexico and Santa Fe. Michael is survived by his loving wife Marianne; his daughters, Michelle Guilbeaut (Philip), Chevonne O'Shaughnessy and Melany Mezzera (Marcelo); and his four wonderful grandchildren, Christina, Robert, John, and Ryan. He was brother to Timothy, Terence, Dennis, and Mary; and brother-in-law to James. He was a proud uncle to many nieces and nephews. Memorials can be made to Museum of New Mexico Foundation, PO Box 2065, Santa Fe, New Mexico 87504 (Attn: Kristen)

He was so sweet and such a kind classy guy. I was thinking about Michael today. He gave me a wonderful book on Filipino cuisine once. The world is sincerely sadder place without him.
