Jon Carlson Obituary

Jon Douglas Carlson fully squeezed the most of out of his time on Earth. An active father of five children married to the love of his life for 50 years, Jon was a prolific scholar, educator, college professor, psychologist, competitive athlete, and advocate for helping others. He often dreamed of fishing and catching the big one, all along he was the big fish for those around him. Jon was born in Elgin, Illinois on November 2, 1945. He attended Elgin High School, and completed his undergraduate and masters degrees at the University of Southern Illinois- Carbondale. It was there that he met Laura Kathryn Twitchell and they were married on December 16, 1967. His first doctorate (Ed.D.) was in counseling and guidance from Wayne State University in 1971 and his second doctoral degree (Psy.D.) was in clinical psychology from the Adler School of Professional Psychology in Chicago in 1990. His teaching career included positions at Wayne State University (1969-1971); Governors State University (1971-73; 1989-2014); Nova Southeastern University (1973-75); University of Hawaii (1976-77); University of Wisconsin-Whitewater (1978-82); and the Adler School of Professional Psychology (1985-89). At the time of his passing, Jon was the Distinguished Professor of Adlerian Psychology at Adler University, Chicago and Professor Emeritus at Governors State University. Jon was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (APA) in six divisions, the American Counseling Association (ACA), and the Wisconsin Psychology Association. He held Diplomates in marriage and family therapy, family psychology, and Adlerian psychology. APA honored him with the Distinguished Career Contributions to Education and Training Award, and ACA designated him as one of the five "Living Legends in Counseling." Jon was a prolific scholar as the author of 64 books, over 185 professional articles and book chapters, and the creator of over 300 professional training videos that are being used in universities and training centers around the world. Jon was a licensed psychologist, marriage and family therapist, clinical counselor, school counselor, alcohol and drug counselor, and a certified sex therapist. He practiced in Illinois, Florida, and Hawaii and at the Lake Geneva Wellness Clinic for over 40 years. He had over 60,000 direct contact hours with individuals, couples and families. During this time he was also a school counselor and school psychologist for 38 years, including 34 years at Woods School in Lake Geneva, WI. Jon was an obsessed runner and was the men's cross country coach at University of Wisconsin-Whitewater from 1978-1982. Jon passed away on February 1, 2017 in Madison Wisconsin due to complications from a bone marrow transplant. He leaves behind his wife of 50 years and five children: Kirstin Carlson, Matt (Alison) Englar-Carlson, Karin (Joseph) Carlson-Snider, Ben Carlson, and Kali (David Glisczinski) Carlson. Jon never sweated the small stuff, didn't believe the heavy stuff would come down for awhile, and his family hopes that on his deathbed he received total consciousness. A celebration of Jon's life is planned for February 19, 2017 at the Horticultural Hall, 330 Broad St, in Lake Geneva, WI. Visitation with family is from 11am to 1pm, with a memorial celebration at 2pm.

By far one of the smartest men I've encountered in my life.
Truly responsible for saving my marriage for 10 years with simple common sense, incredible patience & superior insight.

Received this text of your passing away five years ago John. I looked back and I wrote a note when Steve Fernan another guy you coached told me at my father`s funeral that you had passed on a year and a half earlier. Again, I appreciate you and your family taking me in for two short years as a frequent guest running with you and learning from you. To Laura Kristen and Matthew: be well and thank you. Frank Bender

I was very fortunate to have Jon as my cross-country coach my senior year at UW-Whitewater. He challenged me to be the best that I could be. For while I was a competitive running bum, High school coach and Math teacher. There was one memorable training run I had with him where he busted my fanny; gasping for air, we looked at each other and I asked him how fast could I go if I gave more dedication. He gave me a time he thought I could run a marathon: 2 hours 17 minutes. Phish went any Olympic dreams. I realized then and there it was best for me to focus on realizing other dreams, and back to school I went. Thank you Jon, Laura, Kristin and Mathew for allowing me in your lives. Your dad and husband was an incredible man, and I appreciate all he did, on my behalf and for countless others .

Sincerely,

Oh my...where to start? Kirstin so many fond memories of Wildwood Drive and HS. For some reason the first thought that pops into my head every time I think about your Dad is the night he confronted us and told us we smelled of Lavoris...We laughed so hard and wondered "what is Lavoris?"
So terribly sorry for your loss. Miss you and your Mom and all the great times we had at Wildwood with you and Matt.
So sorry I couldn't make it down for the service. Life gets in the way sometime.
Your Dad was a wonderful man. So grateful I can say I knew him and your family.
Your Woods school and Wildwood buddy,
Mary

Mr Carlson was my AFS exchange dad for one whole year! I remember him being very concerned as to if I had settled into the family and making sure that I was not homesick! A kind loving family man! I was also allowed to sit in on some of his lectures at a College! He was certainly well liked by the students! I am so grateful that I had the chance to meet him! Thinking of the whole family during their mourning. I am sure Mr C is certainly in a better world than what we are in! Go well!

I just learned of Jon's passing. This fine man influenced me with his Adlerian teachings. I never met another individual who had his energy. He lived life to its fullest. He would have it no other way.

No Lake Geneva, Wisconsin runner could even come close to keeping up with Jon Carlson's running pace.
And thanks Jon for all of your help with the Lake Geneva,Wisconsin Marathon and Triathlon.
Maybe, if you would slow down your pace on the other side,Jon, I might run with you there someday.

GOD BLESS YOU

I am so very sorry to hear of Jon's passing. When I was at GSU in the late 1980's Jon was an amazing teacher who compelled his students to always examine and analyze, and self reflect. More importantly for me, Jon was my role model on how to practice my chosen profession with integrity. His obvious care and concern for his family, students, and clients was inspirational.
