Joseph Scully Obituary

Joseph C. Scully, 76, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home in Lakeside, Michigan on Saturday, October 15. He was born September 7, 1940 in Detroit, Michigan to Nora and Clare Scully. Survivors include his wife of 53 years, Judy, his five children Julie, JoEllen, Elizabeth, Kirk, and Katie, his three sons-in-law Pat, Jeff, and Chris and his nine grandchildren, who he adored, Erinn, Joe, Caroline, Jack, Amelia, Charlotte, Natalie, Jackson, and Quinn. He is survived by his brother Edward and preceded in death by his sisters, Roseanne Reid and Margie Griesmer. Joe was the favorite uncle of many nieces and nephews and was a devoted, loyal friend to many.Joe received a Bachelor's Degree in Political Science and a Masters Degree in Business Administration from Loyola University Chicago. He was an active member of the Loyola community and of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity. Joe was a member of the Loyola University Board of Trustees for nine years and supported the university's commitment to provide scholarships to Arupe College and Loyola University students. Joe was President and Chief Executive Officer of St. Paul Federal Savings Bank and was a man dedicated to the advancement of fair housing practices in Chicago and Oak Park during his professional career. He served in leadership positions on numerous community boards including Link Unlimited, Austin Career Education Center, Oak Park Housing Center and CARA, He was quiet, unassuming and unafraid to take unpopular stands for equality and justice. Always up for a new adventure, and as a long-time movie enthusiast, Joe purchased the Vickers Theatre in Three Oaks, Michigan after he retired from banking. For over 43 years, Joe suffered with Parkinson's Disease and was an inspiration to all who knew him, family members and friends. He never let let the disease define who he was. His strength, courage and good humor served him well as the disease progressed and challenged his quality of life. He was an avid golfer and loved nothing more than spending time on the golf course with family and friends. Visitation is scheduled from 3 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Drechsler, Brown & Williams Funeral Home, 203 S. Marion St., Oak Park, Illinois. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, October 20, 11:00 am at Pleasant Home, 217 Home Ave., Oak Park, Illinois. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Mr. Scully's name may be made to Arupe College, Loyola University, Chicago. Joe's life could be summed up with the famous quote: "Try hard to leave the world a little better than you found it." This is Joe Scully's legacy.

We didn't learn of Joe's passing until we attended the movies last night and spotted his obituary on the bulletin board near the ticket window. We are so sad, because the "Vickers" is our entire social life, and we never miss a film except when we are in Florida during the winter. We have been patrons from the time Jon and Jennifer Vickers owned the movie house. We were in a panic when we learned they were moving to Bloomington, but relieved when Joe & Judy and Bill took over ownership. We will continue to think of Joe Scully every time we view a film at this iconic movie house.

I am so very sorry for your loss. I just found out today that Joe passed on last month. I worked at St. Paul Federal from 1986 to 1999, and got to know Joe personally when I started working for Tom Rinella at the corporate office in 1993. It makes me so sad to know he is no longer with us, but I feel very blessed to have known such a good man. There are not many Presidents/CEO's of a company that treated their employees with such kindness and respect as Joe Scully did. He always took the time to say hello and ask how you were doing, because he genuinely cared. He did this with everyone that worked for him, no matter what position they held at the bank. Working at SPF was like working with your family. I can only imagine how much you will miss him.

Judy,
As you know, I had the privilege of being one of Joe's TKE fraternity brothers at Loyola University. Joe was a great leader while in college and continued to be so throughout his life. While we have not been in touch recently -- since our days on Lauderdale Lakes -- I always knew I could reach out to Joe and he would be there for me, as he was for so many. I was unable to express my sympathies in person and hope this brief missive will adequately convey my true regret in learning of Joe's passing. Please know I will keep Joe, you and your family in my prayers.

As a banker selling First Chicago's service to the S&L Industry I called on a great number of CEOs over the course of a number of years & always looked forward to my meetings with Joe. He was always looking for ways to improve St. Paul's operations & increase it's profitability. He would always take the time to visit no matter what else was on his agenda. He made my job a little more enjoyable.

Joe Scully! That smile of Joe's says everything about him; pure unadulterated joy and a deep understanding of humanity that embraced us all. He fell in love with a most loving and smart woman, my high school chum, Judy Kosloskus, and together they created a life that knew no boundaries. We are all grateful to have been part of their circle at one time or another. I can see why Joe supported Arupe College of Loyola; its emphasis on helping promising students who are without resources speaks to his generous heart. He will be missed and remembered fondly. Just wondering: As an avid supporter of women's rights, perhaps he felt he could move on as Hillary's election seems certain now? ;-)

We remember the wonderful times we had in Oak Park. Joe was a great neighbor and a super friend. We enjoyed the times we spent together as families and loved evenings we spent with Judy & Joe. We are so sorry for your loss.

Mr. Scully always stood against injustice and always stood for what was right. Because of this and the fact that he agreed to coach one of the first two girls tee-ball teams in Oak Park, the Blue Angels, girls all over Oak Park got the chance to play baseball. He was an inspiration in my life. Mrs. Scully, Julie, JoEllen, Lizzie, Kirk and Katie you have my deepest sympathy and prayers. The 600 block of Scoville was better because Mr. Scully lived there and was never quite the same when he left. He will be missed.

Condolences,

Mary Kay

Judy, we ask the Lord's blessings on Joe, you and the entire Scully family. May Joe now rest in the peace he so richly deserves. You may remember I was a business colleague of Joe ( Talman Federal ) and years ago you were gracious to invite us to your home for dinner.

We still live in the home on Scoville Ave in Oak Park which we purchased from the Scully family in 1978. Everyone on the block respected the Scullys.
We have always appreciated his dedication to the people of Oak Park and elsewhere in his various involvements.

God's peace to you Judy and members of the family.

Judy: I read of Joe's passing with regret. Anita and I send our deep condolences. Health issues prevent my paying respect at the services. He was a great guy. He was lucky to find you and you were lucky to find him. You stay well and until we all meet again, I will say: "so long.........for a while."
