Kenneth Neff Obituary

Kenneth Neff, age 85, passed away in Palestine, TX on July 12, 2019 after a short illness. The youngest of five children born to Ralph & Loretta Neff, he was born in Kansas City, MO, and raised in Chicago. After graduating from St. Ignatius High School ('52), he entered the New Melleray Abbey in Dubuque, IA as a Trappist Monk. In 1965, he started a smaller Monastic Community in Belleville, IL, moved to Palestine, TX in 1970 to pursue a more simple life of prayer, and lived as a hermit for 18 years. The remaining 31 years of his life were spent in Palestine, where he provided volunteer services through VISTA, child protective services, a women's shelter, Palestine Resource Center, Anderson County Crisis Center, Palestine Regional Hospital, and held weekly rehabilitation classes for inmates at Beto Prison. Throughout his life, he strove to encourage each person he met to realize their full capacity for love and compassion. He travelled annually to visit family and friends in St. Louis, Chicago, and Dubuque. He loved all animals, as well as a good game of tennis! He wanted only to be remembered as a person that lived "a simple life of reflection, prayer, and service." Ken is survived by his sister, Marjorie McDonald (Tom, deceased), 23 nieces and nephews, and numerous friends, including James and Carolyn Parker, all of whom will miss him. He was preceded in death by his brother, Ralph Neff (Joan), and sisters, Virginia Sullivan (Bob), and Loretta Garvey (Bernard). In the spirit of his life, Ken requested no memorial service. To honor and celebrate his life well lived, please consider doing a random act of kindness in his memory, and/or making a donation in his name to the United Nations Children's Fund in New York.

It's been a little over 5 years now. I still think of you often. I've never had talks with anyone like I did with you. I still feel like a failure, cause you're example was truly inspiring. You were one of a kind, truly in my life. I don't know why more people don't write something cause I know you must have impacted many lives just like me. I guess once you're gone people forget! I haven't cause I've never met another person like you. You were the most spiritual person I ever met, and what else is there. There is only one calling to a man's or woman's soul and that is the call of the great source, God as some call him, without that I know I wouldn't still be here. Just wanted you to know I still think about you and miss you so much. You were a true friend. I know I will see you again one day, with all our animals who have gone before us. Goodbye again, my friend!!

Happy Birthday in Heaven, Ken. Don't know your birthday but today is as good as any day. Especially since it is your accent anniversary from here to there. You meant so much to me and I still think about from time to time. I could have spent my whole being mentored by you but it was only a few short years as seems to usually be the case. The good things in life seem to leave too quickly many times. Just wanted you to know wherever you are that I still think about you. The most spiritual and Loving. A truly one of a kind. I wish I could be more like you but I let others hold me back. I will decide today to ignore others opinions, love unconditionally, always see the good, and work to inspire and lift others up just like you did for me. Happy Birthday my friend Ken Neff the greatest man I ever knew. I didn't know they made men like that, such a gentle soul, usually inhabited by the womenkind, but Ken showed me true unconditional love and kindness, always there for me. P. S. I will see you on the other side when I get there. Love you my friend!

I still miss you Ken. You truly were one of a kind. The most loving human being I ever encountered. It's been 2 years since you passed and I will never forget you. You taught me so much in just the few phone calls we had. Sometimes I feel so inadequate in using or expanding on what you would share (teach). I came across some notes I wrote while talking to you. Wish I could find the emails you sent to me w pics of your animals. I went by your house one night after you had passed on a extremely rainy flooded night before they started redoing your house. I'm gonna try to do a better job on my life. You were a great example. Love you my friend until we meet again. You were such a special friend. I just wonder where you are now. Farewell my friend

I still miss this Gentle man and always will. He was the greatest inspiration in my life and death always seems too come too soon to those you love. If we had only known how much time we really had how many more phone calls etc. would we have made. I would have made so many more. I will always love you, Kenneth Neff and if I could just do a small portion of what you did with your life I would count it a success! Until we meet again my friend. I can't believe it has been 2 years. Death always comes too soon and I thought I would have more time but Thankyou for always always being available no matter what time I called. Love you my friend!

I met Ken at Beto. He was truly one of those individuals you only meet once in life. I used to see him at the prison and his thoughts and weekly discussion were truly something to behold. Something totally unexpected with where we were, a truly amazing hour once a week. A truly amazing, and caring and compassionate individual. An Angel no doubt. I lost contact for a few years after release, but not sure how I reconnected but we used to talk on the phone from time to time, never as often as I would have wanted, but that was my fault. He always answered every single time and was never "busy"! He was truly an inspiration and our talks were always mostly of a spiritual nature cause that's the kind of man he was. He was my mentor as much as I ever had one. I always wanted to call him more, but we'd tell each other we loved each other at the end of the call cause we truly did. He meant the world to me and in the short less than 20 years that I knew him was I must say the most impactful and most special person I ever knew. He was truly an Angel. I miss you and love you and have no doubt where you are. He never really claimed to be a Christian, but truly was in every sense of the word, he was devoted to others before himself. We used to talk about our special animals cause we both loved animals. His and my dogs and cats. You can tell with his dog their in the picture, but he had cats he loved too! I got to visit him in East Texas at his home once and it was a beautiful simple place in the heart of nature. He was surrounded by trees and nature cause I'm sure that's where he wanted to be. A simple, nature minded person. He was an Angel gone too soon for me. Goodbye Ken until we meet again. A Great Man!!
